For several hours this afternoon, at the same time, the area inside the red box was under a Tornado Watch while the area outside the red box was under a Winter Weather Advisory.

6 inches of snow at my house since last night, more than that at mountain pass level, and it's supposed to continue all day as we send the California holiday vacationers home across the Sierra.   :-D

I ended up with 9 inches of fresh snow for the storm.  I didn't get in the car at all on Sunday; checking the Caltrans road condition reports and traffic cameras occasionally, it was definitely the usual shitshow leaving Tahoe on US 50 and I-80 when a holiday weekend ends with a snowstorm.

After a very warm and snow-free (but not rain-free) autumn, it started snowing on Christmas Eve, and the Tahoe-area ski resorts have quickly caught up to just below or just over 100% of average snowfall for the date.  However, the next couple weeks don't hold much promise of adding more snow.

One more day of Spring-like conditions (typical of April temperatures), before tomorrow's cold front send us plunging down to cold conditions (cold by our standards)...highs might reach low 60s if that, lows might even drop below 40 in a couple of places; then slowly moderate back to our normal January range by this time next week or next weekend.  For now enjoying one more day at the beach this afternoon.

Overnight Wind Chill:  Under 40 degrees in a couple of locations in Victoria county.

This is what winters in South Texas are like:  80s/90s one day then followed by 50s/60s a couple days later, and occasional severe thunderstorms mixed in somewhere between the air masses, and a gradual moderating/warming of the temperatures before the next cold front drops the floor from under us again and repeat.

From the NWS for my area:

Winter Storm Watch
Issued: 2:01 PM Jan. 20, 2026 – National Weather Service
...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...

  • WHAT...Moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet, or ice are likely across the region Friday through Saturday night. In addition, dangerous cold temperatures are expected Saturday night through Monday morning.
  • WHERE...All of North and Central Texas.
  • WHEN...From Friday afternoon through late Saturday night.
  • IMPACTS...Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become dangerous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause power outages. Extreme cold will become life threatening and likely damage unprotected pipes and put livestock at risk.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation. Have an emergency kit ready. Make winter preparations to home and business before Friday. Check on vulnerable friends and family. Consider delaying or altering weekend travel plans.

Driving "on" snow assumes there's no process for snow removal. Yeah, that might cause some problems.

Was planning on traveling to Charlotte for a concert, but will likely have to stay home or risk getting stuck in ice and snow.

The only snow removal equipment in the DFW area are at the two commercial DFW airports.

Current weather in Lawton is somewhat decent (Sunny, 40° and a bit of wind). It will be decent Thursday. Then on Friday the weather looks like it is really going to go to hell. The whole weekend looks terrible. There's no telling for sure how much snow we'll get, but it may be falling a good bit of Friday, all day Saturday and into Sunday. Some of the model runs have Lawton getting 12" to 15" of snow.

The thing I really don't like is the bitter cold. Saturday night into Sunday and Sunday night into Monday morning our lows could dip close to zero. At best the low temps will be in the mid single digits.

Cold (not currently, but soon)

I'm in the DFW area, and we expect 3 days with lows below 10, and 2 consecutive days, possibly 3, with highs below freezing.  This puts this event in the top few cold events of my lifetime.  It isn't as bad as 5 years ago, when we were below freezing for a week, and days longer than that with a break of an hour, or as bad as 1983, when we were below freezing for over 12 days.  It's probably third after those.

In this area, one day below 15 means you had a good cold snap that winter.  One day below 10 means you had severe cold.  Three days I don't think I've ever seen outside of the two epic events I listed.  This is a typical La Niña winter for this area, warmer than average, but with severe cold.  This winter's been quite nice and will probably be warmer than average overall, but history suggests that some of the coldest weather happens during those years.

Edit- Just after I posed this, an extreme cold watch was issued.  It's the first time I've seen it used, since it replaced the wind chill warning.

Tulsa is right in the bullseye for the snow this weekend. NWS says 8-12 inches of snow, and Apple Weather optimistically predicts 24-30 inches. We also have an extreme cold watch. Considering I haven't really seen more than 2 inches of snow on the ground, I'm excited.

It's hard for Carrie and me to get excited about snow in the forecast.  Way too many times, the forecast calls for several inches of snow, but then there ends up being no more than a dusting or nothing at all.  We both love the snow, but we've wearied of getting our hopes up.

This "storm of the century" is hitting the Mid-Ohio Valley as well. I recall reading a thread that mentioned inaccurate weather forecasts, and ours certainly fit the lines. I've heard snow as much as 15" and as less as a dusting. Who knows what this weekend will bring.

I like snow, too.  Five years ago we got dry snowpack rather than the half-melted slushy stuff we usually get.  It's uncommon, but I remember we had it in 2011, the first time I saw a big truck driving with tire chains.  Usually it's barely cold enough and we get slush or icy junk, but this time is different.  We're expecting severe cold with highs in the 20s and one-digit lows, and we're still getting sleet, snow's offensive cousin.  It isn't pretty or fun to play in, it just messes things up.  It half-melts and turns into ice crust.  We're paying the price in terms of cold weather for snow, but ending up with sleet.  It's like paying for a high-priced toll road and sitting in traffic.  This storm sucks.

You can take Apple Weather and divide their precipitation forecasts (frozen or liquid) by a denominator of 2 or 3. Last January it forecasted apocalyptic snow and we got 6 inches.

And meanwhile, the Colorado mountains who would love this kind of snow are only expecting a little over a foot. If this system hit the mountains dead on, they'd be getting 3-4'.

5°F, with winds from the NE at about 15 mph.  The snow started coming a little less than an hour ago, but it's pretty light still and just dancing along the streets.
