Some new neighbors moved in across the street on the 1st of the month, and their lawn has been growing really, really tall.  He's finally mowing it today.  Big storms came through last night, we got almost 2½ inches of rain, and it's been cool and cloudy all day.  I question his decision-making ability.

He didn't even raise the deck on the mower, from the looks of it.  Took him about 2½ hours to mow just the front and back yard of this property.  Some people...

(No, I have no idea why the house next door is blurred out.  It didn't use to be.  That resident died a month or two ago, the landlord has been fixing up the house since then, and the 'for rent' sign just came down today.)

Looking at near normal to several degrees below normal to close out the month of May.  Overcast skies and scattered rain storms will keep us cooler than average during the day (though the cloudy nights will keep some places like Brownsville above normal during the nighttime.

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:        95 high; 81 low                94 high; 77 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:    90 high; 77 low                92 high; 78 low
LAREDO:                  96 high; 76 low              100 high; 75 low
MCALLEN:                98 high; 79 low                97 high; 77 low

NIGHTTIME HEAT INDEX:  Many places still near 90 degrees around Midnight, then tapering off until sunrise.
DAYTIME HEAT INDEX:  105-110 degrees (Highly unlikely to exceed 110 degrees)

I've been at a PGA Tour tournament in Fort Worth the last few days.  Thursday and Friday were mostly overcast but very humid.  Saturday and Sunday the sun was out, humidity was a little bit lower but it was excruciatingly hot on the golf course with afternoon temperature well into the 90s.

I can deal with heat like that but the addition of humidity does me in.  At Tahoe most summer days have a high temperature around 80°F, with two or three days a year as high as 90°F, and you have to deal with altitude, but there's never any humidity.  These four days in Fort Worth became grueling and reminded me why hot and humid would never work for me as a place to live.

Several destructive and long-track tornadoes in our area tonight. One came within 2 miles of my son's work.

I've seen some pretty devastating footage from Streator, IL. I'd be shocked if there aren't several fatalities there.

Partly sunny and 73, with humidity already stifling.

Just got power back this morning after being out for 35 hrs from the double squall lines we had. Within 24 hrs, we had wind gusts of 65-75 with round 1 (derecho), and 80-105 mph with round 2. Area is a complete wreck with trees, power lines down, roofs ripped off, and even a large billboard cracked in half.

Easily one of the worst storms we've had in awhile, including the July 2024 derecho
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

102F in Fresno today.  I guess it was a good day to get ice cream.

Currently fairly windy from TS Arthur as it goes almost directly over my house. We got 6 inches of rain last night, but locally some areas have seen over a foot.

Temperature-wise, we're only slightly above normal for mid-June at about five degrees from average if that.

But humidity-wise, we're weeks ahead of schedule.  Dew Points will hover right around 80 degrees, which is typical for the first-half of August (but not so much in June).  As a result, the Heat Index in many places will be in the 120s and remaining in the triple-digits overnight.  Ironically it will feel worse at night; at least in the afternoon the fairly strong sea breezes will offer some relief during the day, but the light winds at night will make it feel especially uncomfortable.

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:        100 high; 86 low                96 high; 80 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:      98 high; 84 low                95 high; 79 low
LAREDO:                  104 high; 82 low              103 high; 76 low
MCALLEN:                103 high; 83 low                99 high; 78 low

NIGHTTIME HEAT INDEX:  95 to 105 degrees
DAYTIME HEAT INDEX:  115 to 125 degrees

P.S.:  I guess I can kind of see why our climate might not appeal to some of the members here.

June 18th Update:  The Heat Index in the Kingsville area actually reached 130 degrees earlier this afternoon.

People up here in San Antonio are not enjoying this small heatwave. The general consensus is that it is much too hot for mid-June. I'm not really used to the weather here, but this does seem pretty outrageously hot.

The dew point being over 80 is wild to me. I've never seen that before.

Road Hog

In North Texas, it's been a typical June: hot, humid and quite a bit of rain. This morning, places around Dallas got 4-5". It'll likely be like this until July 10, when the switch will flip and we'll be at 100° every day until Labor Day. We caught a break last year in August.

73 with sun and breezy winds.

To those still unfamiliar with dew points, the link above give you a general example of comfort levels.  RH doesn't really measure how moist the air actually is....look at it this way:  we're much more likely going to see 100% RH in the winter months than the summer months.  When you go outside and start feeling sweaty, look at the dew point in your area and you get the idea.

Cloudy with a chance of rain and 67.

We had some strong thunderstorms yesterday afternoon, but a few miles west in Burke they got far worse. The weathermen are saying they've seen no indication of a tornado and that instead there was a "downdraft." Photos from Twitter. The bowling alley seen in some of these is on Guinea Road in Fairfax County just east of Zion Drive, if you want to look at a map to see where this was.

Currently 97°F with a heat index of 110°F!

For context, temperatures in Rochester have only reached 100°F six times in recorded history, most recently in 1953. I wasn't around then, so this is easily one of the warmest days I can remember and almost certainly top five in my lifetime.

76, cloudy and humid. May be triple digits today.

Hear, hear. I'm in central Quebec (between Montreal and Quebec city) right now. People here are complaining about temps (official yellow heat warning) not each reaching the 90Fs. I tell them that's nothing compared to south of the border, with the heat dome in the D.C. area, where I and much of my family live, driving temps over 100F and heat indices over 110F.
