U.N. to Impose "Universal" 100 km/h Speed Limit

   The United Nations General Assembly, at the behest of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) voted this morning to adopt a resolution implementing a maximum 100 km/h (62 m.p.h.) highway speed limit for all United Nations member states, including the United States and all Western European countries. The move is in response to the "ever growing threat of Climate Change upon vulnerable population groups". The resolution takes effect on July 1, 2016. Any nation not in compliance after that date will be subject to economic and trade sanctions.

   The United States and the United Kingdom, which have not converted to the metric system, are expected to post 60 m.p.h. speed limits.

   The only opposition to the measure came from Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. While the move was praised by the Obama administration and the American Automobile Association, as well as environmental protection groups such as the Sierra Club and Green Peace, the National Motorist Association in the United States was quick to condemn the move as "draconian overreach of global government".
