Exit 58 will likely be for NC 192 itself. Only eastbound 192 at the Interstate 74/NC 192 interchange will be numbered Exit 3.

He's asking because you can clearly see the '57' here on the unopened segment of highway.

Seems like NCDOT is doing another 'double number' issue like with US-70 @ the eastern end of the I-42 Gol segment.  369 going EB, while 370 going WB.

Meanwhile, a Waze editor from NC contacted me to say that the interchange with NC 72 and NC 130 on US 74 near Orrum is now open. Something to check out for anyone traveling that way for the holiday weekend.

Can anyone explain to me why the westbound exit at NC-192 is signed as exit 58?

Exit 58? It may be an error on the signage on westbound I-74, or the Exit 57 one that is going to NC-192 West is a long ramp (looks like it is based on Google Maps). When I was at the area going westbound, the signage was covered, so I have no idea if it is Exit 58 or 57 going west.

If it is an error, then it is probably on I-74 West as the plans for I-74 East have NC 192 as Exit 57:

Unfortunately, I do not have the sign plans for this exit heading west.

Sign plans do confirm the I-74 exit on I-40 is 198:

vdeane

Split numbering in the case of large interchanges is not unprecedented, and this wouldn't even be the worst example of such I can think of.  On I-690, the NY 695 interchange is exit 10 EB and exit 12A WB, while the interchange with NY 297 is exit 11 EB and exit 12B WB!
Please note: All comments here represent my own personal opinion and do not reflect the official position of NYSDOT or its affiliates.

NE2

That's the kind of crap that happens when you number by ramp location rather than center of the interchange. Brasil is horrible with this.

With the I-74/I-40 interchange being listed as just under 90% complete on the PROGLOC website and the last section to connect the Beltway at 94%, how soon do you think they can open the section to traffic and finish the project with lane closures? I think they opened the US 52/NC 74 interchange on the north end in the same completion percentage range.

Good question. I am monitoring the traffic cameras at the US 421 interchange with the Beltway. They show the unopened I-74 lanes east of the Salem Parkway ramp and the sign gantry at the unopened I-74 East exit ramp on the Parkway. The appearance of lane markings or new signage going up would be a sure sign that the opening is getting close. Nothing yet.

They're going for the opening sometime this year (probably the end of this year). They still have some work to do at one of the flyover bridges and on I-40 just west of the interchange though.

I hope they open at least the main I-74 lanes similar to what they did with the NC-74/US-52 interchange sooner to at least get the long-distance traffic off US-52 through Winston-Salem. They can continue to work on the exit movements between I-40 and I-74 since NC-192 can temporarily act as a connector between I-40 and I-74 until the exit movements are open.

But we will see.

The I-40 to I-74 Beltway project has disappeared from the NCDOT Construction Progress Report site, indicating it's complete as far as NCDOT is concerned. Meanwhile the US 421 to I-40 project is now 90.7% complete, the official completion date is still May 2027, but assuming it could open around 94-95%, at this pace it may be only another 3 or 4 months. A Labor Day weekend opening?

It appears NCDOT has started signing I-74 along the Winston-Salem Beltway. Got an email from a source in the area indicating he saw new I-74 shields approaching the Beltway on US 421. Sure enough, this traffic camera image shows I-74 replacing NC 74 on the pull through sign heading west at US 421:

A quick check of the other Beltway cameras did not provide any other useful images of signs to see how far the change has gone. Don't know if this means the opening of the remaining Beltway segment is imminent or just NCDOT trying to legitimize the signing of I-74 along the Beltway on their new traffic map.

Based on an email I received from a Winston-Salem contact who traveled along the Beltway between US 421 and US 311 North (direction now added) yesterday, I-74 shields have appeared on overhead signs at ramps, such as at US 158, but the reassurance markers and ramp trailblazers still say NC 74. While the overheads do now refer to US 311 North at the New Walkertown Road exit, US 311 is still signed south of the Beltway to Winston-Salem.

Interesting that the Lane Ends warning sign is over a lane that does not appear to be striped as such.

But hopefully it gets the point across that the only lane drops ahead.  That one lane is currently an extension of onramp from US-421 southbound (former Green 40 eastbound) onto NC-74 northbound at the current beginning of the Northern Loop.  Both the westbound onramp and eastbound onramp merge onto the through lanes ahead (which are not yet in use here).  But this will soon become a set of collector lanes.  That offramp here is currently only usable as a U-turn.

Since North Carolina is not like South Carolina, the directionals on US-421 never made any sense to me.

I thought the "lane ends" sign pointing to the shoulder was meant to refer to the shoulder ending ahead, because in the background that C/D ramp goes over a bridge with no left shoulder.

I like the little Beltway being formed here. They should put up "Heritage Farm Beltway" signs.

I can confirm I just saw the I-74 West sign for the soon-to-be-NC-192 exit from I-40 West has been officially changed to NC-192 West - To Ridgewood Rd. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. Waze also had I-74 closed between the Ridgewood Rd and Union Cross Rd exits but it was still open - even if one lane. Ridgewood Rd. is now marked as Exit 2.
