meh.  Gas was more expensive in the summers of '08 (adjusted for inflation) and '22.

Heck, the average price of gas in March 2012, when adjusted for inflation, was $5.57/gal.

Doug ran a 2012 gas station photo on our Facebook page from Utah at the junction of US 191 and 491.  The inflation indexed price was about $5.40 for a gallon of regular.  It just struck me as a case of the more things change the more they stay the same.

Speaking of low hanging nearby significant roadways I'm looking at clinching, I have my eye on Tassajara Road for this summer.  I'm trying to get my wife to go with me since she likes hot springs.  The closest state highway I haven't finished no doubt is in central Nevada somewhere.

I'm looking at about 3350 miles this summer for a road trip that will include golf tournaments in Omaha and Boise.

At 28 mpg average, that's 120 gallons of gas.  So the difference between $3/gallon and $6/gallon is $360.

The total budget for the trip is around $3700.  Hotels and restaurants are both budgeted for more than gas, even at 120 gallons x $6.  I don't like it, but a 10% increase in the total cost of the trip isn't a dealbreaker.

On topic, I expect to clinch I-86 in Idaho as part of the trip.

In my case, both roads I've clinched in this thread in the past week are within 20 miles of my house and easily drivable in an hour. Gas being about $3.69 at the local Buc-ee's helps too. I didn't do much driving in 2022 when gas prices then were absolutely ludicrous.
