Quote from: Plutonic Panda on May 24, 2023, 03:33:34 PMIs that bridge to the NW of the I-95 twin bridges open for walking and biking?

It wasn't the last time i drove past, which was about 6 years ago. Fully gated off on both ends.

That was reopened? Hmm.

Oh well, when the replacement for the current bridges across Lake Marion are built, what they ought to do is add fishing piers jutting out from the west side bike and hike lane.

Anyway, I posted a message about an incident on I-95 from 25 years ago which only could've happened because the road is four lanes wide.

Yeah, I just fixed that, and a typo.

PLEASE EMAIL SCDOT with this very helpful idea:

On I-85 through SC, move those wonderful shoulder signs "State Law: Slower Traffic Move Right" and mount them

ON THE CENTER DIVIDER or on OVERHEAD GANTRIES!!!!

I-85 is so crowded and nearing capacity today. Its flow is significantly impeded by slow pokes in the left and center lanes, every day, all day, all night.

Getting that state law sign directly in their field of vision would help thru-put on this super-busy industrial corridor. Thank you.!

I have emailed them already to no avail.

Wrong highway here, we're discussing I-95! Not certain what I-85 has to do with this.

Besides, DOT doesn't enforce the law, they can't order Highway Patrol to increase left lane patrols. The signs don't write the tickets.

Although for I-95 I can't imagine the left lane problem is much better. Bad drivers are still that regardless of what number the road carries

This is a page discussing I-95 widening projects... not I-85 left lane drivers.

Excuse me for trying to put this request in front of eyes that care about SC highways.

The Highway Patrol isn't needed, just getting those State Law signs to be visible to the scofflaws is enough to significantly increase traffic throughput, reduce hundreds of extra lane changes each day, and make all motorists' lives better.

It stands to reason that these vertical, thin, shoulder signs are installed statewide on all interstates in SC.

Having traversed the state on I-85 probably 50 times in the past 2 years, I know that moving these wonderful signs would increase their effectiveness. I will send another email to SCDOT now.

You could have improved the lives of thousands of people too in the time it took to say "this is not the I-85 thread."

South Carolina is lagging on I-95.

Florida and Georgia are complete.  North Carolina in progress.  South Carolina is now just thinking of beginning.

Reminds me of Tennessee with I-24 between Murfreesboro and Chattanooga save for the southern foot of Monteagle and I-75 between Ooltewah and the Kentucky border save for metropolitan Knoxville.

Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky have either completed or are in the process of widening I-75 from Naples to Cincinnati and the Florida Turnpike - I-75 - I-24 - I-65 from Miami to Louisville, two of the busiest truck routes in the USA (especially when you extend them to Detroit and Chicago respectively) if not the absolute two busiest, especially for the 493 miles they share the same alignment.  There are a handful that give them a run for their money.  Not many.

Has Tennessee widened the majority of their portion?  Nope, not yet anyway.  And I doubt it will anytime soon.

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, the dream is gone.

Ground has been broken on the widening of I-95 from GA/SC state line to US 278 (~10 miles)!

Is there a big ADT drop at 278?

More likely a big budget drop at that distance.

They really need to get to I-26. I'm guessing the next phase will be to reach US 17 at exit 33 which would probably eliminate long backups that will likely just move to US 278.

Corrected exit number at US 17.  -Mark

What are the project limits -- GA/SC border to 10 miles north?

High cost could reflect bridgework and wetlands handling.

How many mainline bridges? Will they be totally replaced? How many long bridges and how long? How much fill needed in wetland areas -- or are they going to address it with long trestle bridges? Is SCDOT going to build the entire Savannah River bridge segment, and will this be a total replacement?

My guess is the Savannah River crossing will indeed be completely replaced, much like they just did with the I-20 crossing in North Augusta.  The original I-20 crossing opened I believe in the mid 60's so it was time for full replacement.  I believe I remember seeing 1979 engraved in the bridge parapets on the I-95 crossing, and considering the traffic volumes it sees, a complete replacement is probably justified.

I would imagine the US 17 overpass will be completely replaced as it is original from the 60's, as well as the John Smith Rd overpass (looks very rusty).  The bridge over SC 46 will probably be widened and refurbished.  And I believe the US 278 overpass is from the 90's so it may be ok.

Also I believe a new Exit 1 is supposed to be built to serve a new Port of South Carolina access point.  Not sure if it's included in this project or not.
