BEGIN NORTH MD 223 in Accokeek in P.G. County. This one has a practical purpose because SHA has a habit of ending state routes in unusual spots, and MD 223 not only becomes a county road south of the intersection where this sign is, but the road it intersects is also a county road.

ADOT never uses BEGIN plaques, so I think this one and the one at the other end of US 191 Temp are the only ones I've seen in Arizona.

Why are the top two plaques mounted sideways?
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

Looks like this was previously posted several years ago, but I was too excited about making it here to not share. Doesn't look like much has changed over the years, other than the tree filling in and the zero milepost getting replaced?

And the beginning of the southernmost segment of FL A1A nearby:

"Now, what if da Bearss were to enter the Indianapolis 5-hunnert?"
"How would they compete?"
"Let's say they rode together in a big buss."
"Is Ditka driving?"
"Of course!"
"Then I like da Bear buss."
"DA BEARSSS BUSSSS"

Because they never use them.

US 191 Temp is a somewhat permanent temporary situation because they keep having to move the highway due to the continued expansion of the Morenci Mine, so I assume they're sideways because they don't want to potentially confuse drivers with the technical temporary designation. It's basically just regular US 191 with special signs, mile markers that don't match up with the permanent sections, and a potentially different alignment if you come back in several years.  :-D

Another Maryland one I discovered today: BEGIN MD 206 along Konterra Drive in west Laurel, less than half a mile prior to END MD 206 at Old Gunpowder Road.

There's a "Begin SR-164" panel slapped onto  this underpass in Auburn, Washington

I stand corrected. This new assembly seems to have gone up within the past year at the California state line. Previously, this road was signed as AZ 95 Truck (without a BEGIN plaque), but I believe the internal designation is AZ 95 Alt, even though I personally think this road should be a Spur as it is a short connector between AZ 95 and CA 62.

Except in cases where one route seamlessly transitions into becoming another route—such as at a freeway interchange—I don't really see the point of [BEGIN] plaques.  If I need to turn, say, left onto NV-206 South, and I turn left onto NV-206, I do appreciate the reassurance shield for [SOUTH|206], but the [BEGIN] plaque doesn't matter.

A lot of times you don't get reassurance shields at State Highway junctions in Nevada (namely in the 700-800 ranges). I think purpose is more for the DOT workers to know where state highway corridors start and end.

You'd think the Nevada postmiles would do for demarcating state maintenance, though. Of all people, they should know what they mean.

822 in Dayton is one particular I find amusing.  All that route consists of some asphalt and a bridge over the Carson River east of US 50.  But for some reason it has a full set of signage and postmile paddles.

It's in the shadow of the overpasses carrying I-269, but it's there: an eastbound begin marker for I-22.
