Dawson >> Nowell (Joliet, IL)

Nowell is just down the street from a Rowell Av....which I posted earlier, I believe.

Flag on  the play. "Le Boulevard" means "The Boulevard," so "le" is technically not a playable part of the name. I don't think any existing rule covers a situation like this, though. It's almost like someone trying to play "Broadway," except that in that case we can chop off the "-way" and make the play "Broad."

So my ruling is this: "Nowell" is still the current word. We'll discuss this situation and decide what the rule should be for this case.

On further review, I see that rule 17 can apply here:

QuoteOptional words: Words on the lists below may be included or omitted from the title.

- At the beginning of the name: Titles such as "Dr.", "Saint," "Honorable," etc where the rest of the name is someone's name. Prepositions and articles ("of the", etc.)
- At the end of the name: Name suffixes such as "Sr.," "Jr.", etc. The word "memorial."

The problem is that the playable part of the name is only the article "le." "Boulevard" isn't playable because it is the street type. But I'm pretty sure that the name of the road is not "le." Can I go to Montreal and ask "Comment puis-je arriver à 'Le'?" ("How do you get to 'The'?") I'd expect the response to be "Le quoi?" (Or something like that. I've never been conversational in French.)

(Consider an address 100 on "The Boulevard." Would you say the address is "100 The" or "100 The Boulevard"?)

Since Rule 17 makes the article optional, does that mean that the next person can treat Le Boulevard as the empty string and play any letter they want?

I would, in this case, treat "Boulevard" as part of the name. As another example, were I to play the Atlanta street Boulevard (after dropping the quadrant suffix, signed exactly as such), I can't think of any saner way to handle that.

I agree. Ruling: In these cases, and only in these cases, the type of road becomes playable. "Le Boulevard" in Montreal can play as L_D or B_D. If you can find a sign naming the aforementioned Atlanta street "The Boulevard," you can play it as T_D; otherwise it will play as B_D.
