The new auxiliary lane on 285 westbound from Roswell Road to Riverside Drive is finally open.

Tomahawkin

I swear, I saw Stadiums built in lesser time than it took to build that BS auxiliary lane. The contractors on that job really milked that project! Same with the McGinnis Ferry road bridge replacement over S.R. 400

Does anyone agree with me in thinking that these very long collector/distributor lanes would benefit by having a few reflectors on the concrete barrier on the left separating them from the mainline interstate? My gut reflex is to always merge left quickly on to the main highway to get over to the faster left lanes and the mix of on ramps with and without being a long C/D lane has almost caused me to merge too quickly and almost hit one of these long gray concrete medians that are almost invisible at night.

Maybe it's just me but in Gwinnett and on I-285 there are some really long CD lanes. I'd love a few yellow reflectors on the left side to be reminded of the separation from the mainline.

Reflectors yes, or better yet... lighting!!! I-285 is way too dark at night for how much traffic it gets, and I agree it creates dangerous situations, such as what you are describing.

Tomahawkin

I Agree, I See ladders, mattresses, furniture, etc on 285 all the time during the dark hours! Hopefully those Turds @ GDOT Will add overhead lighting when all the toll lanes are finished in 2036, SMFH!

$1.8 billion for express lanes on I-75 in Henry County. GDOT should've built bi-directional express lanes from the start!

Will these express lanes be elevated like the ones north of the city?

I'd like to believe so.

I hope there's a comment period. The I-75 extra express lanes are sorely needed in that stretch!

Tomahawkin

It should have been done from the start! Same with the IH 75 toll lanes in Cobb County! And for the Love, Make US 27 A full interstate since the Govt refuses to build an outer perimeter for all the truck traffic! Im hearing a lot of truck drivers take that route while driving to Florida???

I very much doubt that is the case, if they are going from Chattanooga to Florida, they are going to stick to 75.
Even if they were going to the Panhandle, they would hop on 85 down to 185 then down 231/431.

When this reversible lane was built, Express Lanes were still unproven in the metro area. I don't remember the exact year it was built, but previously they had to work hard to come up with the initial construction funding, and prior to 2015 when Deal got the gas tax increased 10 cents per gallon, Georgia ranked 49th in transportation spending per capita. Also of the paltry amount of gas previously collected before 2015, 25% went to the general fund for the state to spend on other things. Hopefully that is no longer happening. And Gov. Kemp has dedicated a couple of billion of surplus money to go towards transportation. I think now the annual budget for GDOT is between $5-6 billion which is much better than the $2 billion they used to operate on.

At 285-20 east, I noticed that little bents have been built on the outboard side of the bridge over I-20 for the ramp from eastbound 20 to northbound 285, presumably enough for a second lane. I'm not sure this is a good idea since the new lane will be one of three that must be done away with before Glenwood Road. The westbound-to-westbound flyover is progressing slowly, but the at-grade portions of the ramp are, too. It's gonna be a while before the next big day.

Georgia Guardrail

I am curious about this project to rebuild I 285 on the west side.

I assume this means that they are essentially going to replace the concrete I 285 with asphalt, redo all the median and bridge guardrails on I-285, and improve the lighting.  Any bridge replacements?  If not, it would be nice if they could at least improve the aesthetics of some of the older bridges in that area like they did with the Camp Creek Parkway bridge.

With the upcoming toll lanes project also about to get underway, I-285 is going to look a whole lot different from what it is now. Hopefully these projects will all be worth it in the end.

Beams are being set on the west side 20/285 interchange.  Looks like ramps for 20W to 285S and 285N to 20W.

Tomahawkin

The 20WB to 285 SB interchange  Top Ramp is scheduled to open Circa May 15th. Im so ready for all those concrete barriers to be removed from those narrow lanes. Driving through there from Panola Rd is Dangerous as #### during the day, let alone at night...

Georgia

Yea, the work on the east side interchange has been seriously impressive, i am just waiting for something to go wrong.

Even the west side interchange is making decent progress, drove through last Wednesday and they had crews working on intermediate bents, pile driving and drilling piers.  good to see all the trades doing work.  of course, weather has been dry so that will always help production.

Tomahawkin

@Georgia, any word on when the 285 toll lanes in Dekalb county will start? Tease the folks! Im guessing a year from now!

haha gosh i hope so, sooner the better on all the toll lane projects.

Tomahawkin

I really wish that GDOT would improve the 285 US 78 interchange when they add toll lanes in that area. those left handed merges are the reason why 285 gets backed up! It needs a total makeover and all the bridges over 285 (The ones that were built in the 60's-80s) in general need to be rebuilt!

Georgia Guardrail

Looks like the I 20 W to I 285 S flyover ramp may be opening soon on the east I 285/I 20 interchange project.  GDOT just posted a video on their YouTube channel of the new traffic pattern.  Anyone know the exact date this ramp will open?

Tomahawkin

It was supposed to be May 15th, but I think they pushed it back a month? Im guessing they are waiting on the widened 285 bridge over Snapfinger road to get completed?

AFAIK, their Facebook posts have never given a date. The latest said "this summer."  :hmmm:

Tomahawkin

I saw it on a mobile VMS Sign in that area. I also saw one today on 285 before the Glenwood Dr exit, saying that there would be a traffic shift coming on May 24th...But "Im not falling for the banana in the tailpipe"
