Been looking at old auto trail maps of Arizona. Very informative. This helped me piece together the story of US 80 through the state and is helping me unlock some of the secrets behind SR 84. Apparently SR 84 was part of a long forgotten Auto Trail I had never heard of in Arizona before called the Lone Star Trail. It appears what became SR 86 later was also part of the Lone Star Trail as was US 80 between them both. Though I'm finding no references of the Lone Star Trail west of Gila Bend. I can only assume this long forgotten auto route started in Texas. Here, have a look for yourselves:

What's bothering me is the Dixie Overland Highway stops showing up west of Las Cruces in 1925, yet I found no evidence anecdote-wise to prove the DOH was truncated. It's odd that from 1925 on the only route Rand McNally displays along what became US 80 is the Old Spanish Trail. Yet on many other roads, they show multiplexes. Did they cut back the DOH and Bankhead Highways or perhaps the OST organization paid Rand McNally to remove them from the map?
