Las Vegas: Another proposal to reduce northbound airport exit congestion

It is interesting that there is planned only a one-way intechange, westbound is grade separated, but eastbound is at grade. 

Given the traffic here, it is certainly good to have something like this to avoid grade crossings btwn Tropicana and Paradise / University Center.  Cross traffic routings, like what we have on Desert Inn, is needed to keep traffic moving.

Perks for one direction of travel but not the other isn't unheard of in the Las Vegas valley—see the eastbound bypass lanes on Cheyenne west of Rampart, for instance.

Desert Inn is a cool idea but it's entirely ruined by the light at Paradise Road. It's kind of a crapshoot whether DI is actually faster than just slogging across LVB at-grade on Flamingo.

Most locals still call University Center by its original name, Swenson Street. It was renamed because someone did a deep dive into history and nobody could figure out who Swenson was or if anyone even actually existed by that name at all. That and the intersection of Twain and Swenson is a notoriously bad part of town, so other places along Swenson didn't want to be associated with it.

There is now yet another iteration of this project to alleviate the congestion at Tropicana Ave & University Center Dr in Las Vegas that comes from the northern egress of the airport and airport connector. It's actually scaling the scope back to a modification of what was the second iteration of this proposal back in 2019: a flyover/overpass. But this time, UNLV appears to be on board—and with the price tag scaled back to $97M, Clark County seems like they may have the money to actually make this version happen.

The county is now ready to move ahead with a modified northbound University Center overpass that is 400 feet shorter than the plan proposed seven years ago and has one less bridge structure.

The plan was presented at last week's Clark County Commission meeting with an estimated cost of $97 million, less than half the cost of the below-ground version.

The revised overpass makes the Thomas & Mack more visible than the original overpass; it was about 75 percent obscured by the 2018 version of the structure.

The revised overpass would take two years to construct, as opposed to three years for the revised DDI. The updated overpass project would only require the acquisition of 5 acres of Department of Aviation right-of-way, compared with 15 acres for the DDI project.

This time around, after regular contact with the county throughout the process, including an update heard at the May 21 Board of Regents meeting, UNLV is in favor of the above-grade intersection upgrade.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A yearslong effort to limit congestion at the Tropicana Avenue and University Center Drive intersection appears to be on the right track after years of planning adjustments.

The intersection, commonly listed among the top crash intersections for Metro Police's south central area command, is where officials want to put a grade separation roadway. Planning began in 2018, and its estimated costs reached as high as $210 million, with completion expected to take more than 36 months.

But a July 7 update from Kaizad Yazdani from Clark County Public Works reveals the project now has an estimated cost of just $97 million and an estimated completion time of 2 years.

The update was welcome news for Clark County Commissioners like James Gibson: "This has not been a labor of love; this has been very difficult. We've been briefed every single month for years," Gibson said.

The purpose of the project is to relieve congestion, improve safety, and improve access for airport traffic traveling to the Resort Corridor and for traffic traveling to and from the Thomas and Mack Center, according to a presentation by Yazdani.

The estimated cost for the project in 2019 was $78 million and would create an overpass from University Center Drive over Tropicana, allowing traffic to flow freely northbound and westbound to Tropicana. But UNLV officials did not want the overpass blocking the view of Thomas and Mack Center from nearby streets, according to Yazdani.

UNLV officials provided feedback, which resulted in changes to the project that would have cost the project $195 million and cost the Thomas and Mack Center roughly 400 parking spaces, according to Yazdani's presentation.

Other revisions brought the estimated costs to $115 million and $210 million. But by removing a bridge structure and reducing the total length of the overpass by 400 feet, the project now sits at an estimated $97 million and promises a less obstructed view of the Thomas and Mack Center, according to Yazdani.

During the July 7 meeting, Commissioner Gibson appeared to give Yazdani a go-ahead to complete this revised plan so that commissioners can move ahead with the project, which still includes official budgeting, scheduling, and construction.

"I'm so relieved we are back to something our wallets can accommodate," Gibson said.
