(For I-95)  PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Reopens Front Street Ramp

QuotePhiladelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the Front Street ramp to northbound I-95 in South Philadelphia has reopened to traffic. The ramp had been closed since Monday, March 17, to maintain mainline I-95 traffic for high-priority bridge repairs.

Under this $40.3 million project, PennDOT's contractor will make repairs to the deteriorated bridge decks, superstructure components, and portions of the substructures as needed on 27 interstate bridges in the City.

Work on the superstructures will include repairing fabricated structural steel, weld cracks, prestressed concrete beams, reinforced concrete bridge deck, bridge railing, guiderail, and steel sign supports; and replacing existing expansion joints, seal existing deck joints, and existing strip seal glands on the bridge decks.

Work on the substructures will include repairing or reconstructing bearing pedestals, steel fixed bearings, and deteriorated portions of concrete substructure; cleaning bridge seats; resetting expansion bearings; and removing debris from under the bridges.

In addition to bridge repairs, 11 overhead steel sign structures will be cleaned and repainted. Existing roadway lighting will also be upgraded to LED luminaires.

IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, N.J., is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Construction on this project is expected to be completed in late 2027.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Bridge Deck Repair to Close Section of I-76 West This Weekend in Philadelphia

PennDOT - District 6 News: Construction to Close I-76 West Ramp to I-676 East Tonight in Philadelphia

QuotePhiladelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that utility construction will close the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to eastbound I-676 under the $148.9 million project to rehabilitate the bridges that carry Market Street over Amtrak and I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), the Schuylkill River Trail, and CSX Railroad in Center City Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

Wednesday, July 23, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to eastbound I-676 will be closed and detoured. Westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) motorists will be directed to exit at 30th Street (Exit 345) and continue on Schuylkill Avenue West to access the ramp to eastbound I-676.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because significant backups and delays will occur.

Under this bridge improvement project, the superstructure on the existing Market Street bridge over Amtrak and I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), at the intersection of Schuylkill Avenue West and Market Street, will be partially demolished and replaced. The deteriorated deck and sidewalks of the immediately adjacent Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River will also be replaced, and the existing four-span Market Street bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad on the east side of the river will be replaced with a single-span bridge and retaining walls.

Along with structural work on the bridges, Market Street's pavement will be reconfigured from Schuylkill Avenue West to 23rd Street to enhance the existing transportation network and accommodate vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. The new pavement will include two, 10-foot-wide travel lanes in both directions with turning lanes and wide sidewalks. A two-way bicycle lane with concrete separators will be installed and connected to the existing bicycle facilities at 23rd Street. A bicycle signal will be installed at Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue West.

Modifications and upgrades will also be made to the traffic signals in the project area, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) improvements and replacement of new highway lighting, bridge enhancement lighting, and navigation lighting systems.

The project will repair the west and east river walls supporting the Schuylkill River banks from Market Street to south of Walnut Street and repair the pedestrian staircase between the Schuylkill River Trail and JFK Boulevard to address settlement.

Buckley & Company Inc., of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
