Full Length Interstates
« on: October 28, 2019, 01:03:14 AM »

Hey everyone  :poke:
I make the "Full Length Interstates" series on Youtube - real time videos of the full length of interstates recorded without commentary.
Here's an example of my work:
Since I live in Massachusetts, my recordings are Interstates I can access in a day trip. Interstates filmed include, I-89, I-91, I-93, portions of I-95, and the local I-84, I-190, I-290, I-195, I-295, I-395, and I-495.
Additional videos include driving videos from various computer games.
For the past year I've been posting these videos on my personal channel. Recently I've decided to start a dedicated channel for Full Length Interstates, to create a degree of separation between my other activity on youtube and this hobby. I've migrated most of my videos over to the new channel, so the old videos are now unlisted.
I've also posted some new content for the FLI channel:
Reshoots: I-495 retake, I-93 retake, I-93 night
New Interstates: I-787
The I-787 is the result of branching out into non-interstates. My most recent video is of the State Route 2's from Boston to Albany. A new thing I'm trying in the upload process is to upscale to 4k to increase quality. Youtube compresses the crap out of high motion and high detail footage, so upscaling is one way to achieve higher bitrate. Unfortunately the Route 2 video seems to be stuck at 1080p, it's something I'm trying to resolve with Youtube Support.
Another thing I'm trying is head mounted go-pro style POV footage. I've already posted a short 4K/60fps POV video I recorded driving through Providence as a way to test my new action camera. I am currently processing POV video of a large portion of a certain US highway.
I have a few more ideas planned for the channel, a week trip planned for when the days get longer again, and maybe something that involves my other license.
The Full Length Interstate twitter account is @FLItweets. My channel is available at the link youtube.com/channel/UCL_SonaQeGtH0Mp1ri9zHHQ, I also bought the domain name FullLengthInterstates.com to redirect to the youtube page. My current goal with the channel is to get to 100 subscribers so I can customize the channel URL on youtube, so I would appreciate a follow :bigass:
If you've seen my videos before, thank you for your support! The roads are mainly why I do this, but it doesn't hurt knowing there are people who watch this stuff (I too, often use my own product)

My new video just finished processing! It's the full length of US 6 in New England, eastbound from the NY border to Cape Cod. What's special is that the entire video is POV filmed on a head-mounted camera, just something different I'm trying out.
Thanks for watching!

Nice video of the 93.
Perhaps a full length of the Mass Pike from 1A/Logan to the NY line could be the next big vid (unless the tolls would be too much)?

Do you do requests? RI-MA 146?

146 is, along with the 4 lane section of MA 24/ 79, not a good highway, but I guess that's what makes it interesting.

I don't like the idea of going out of my way for a short non-interstate, especially if it isn't a freeway. Someone on youtube suggested MA 3A, an example of something I am unlikely to do. I think 146 could be worth doing, considering both my proximity to it and its importance as part of the I-190+I-195 "beltway".

In terms of day trip options, I've pretty much run out of interstates in New England. Commuting to NYC opens up a whole new range of day trip possibilities but... 2x3 hour commute + NYC traffic and tolls will either make me stronger or destroy me :pan: The other option is to redo some of my existing videos, both incorporating general quality improvements and winter scenery.

I prefer to leave short 3dis to locals (I don't live near springfield) although I'm not above getting low hanging fruit. I have a route planned that would string together the 3dis in western MA/CT nicely but I don't have immediate plans for recording it yet
New videos on my channel since my last post:

4K50:
Interstate 293

Interstate 393

Maine I-195

1080p:

DC I-495 Capital Beltway Outer Loop

NY/MA Route 2 Eastbound w/GPS readout

I-90 eastbound east of the I-88 interchange/ NY Exit 25A 1080p:

Uploads since my last post:

I-95 Baltimore to Providence 4K60
This is a composite of the I-95 trip I did in December and a reshoot of everything east of NY

POV:
I recorded the GSP and I-287 in NY/NJ in the same session. White balance isn't very good and idk how to tweak it. These videos were recorded in "4K super" mode which is a taller aspect ratio. I assume that the actual aspect ratio is 1:1 (I haven't found actual documentation to confirm this. The footage comes in 3840x2160 with no aspect ratio defined in the metadata), but I changed it to 6:5 because 1:1 looks way too narrow.

Garden State Parkway
I-287 (sunrise/set on the north/east portion in both directions due to time management issues)

I also rendered the POV shots of I-90 between Boston and Albany
Westbound:
Eastbound:

More videos in the pipeline!

I've published quite a few videos since my last post here, and I am posting a 4K60 recording of MA I-495 today! I am trying out a driving style where I maintain access to the left lane when approaching an on-ramp by speeding up. This also has the effect of reducing the chance I will need a break (and risk covid exposure) due to faster, uh, transit times. Still not sure if I wanna use this technique out of state yet!

MA I-495/Route 25 4K60 (queued for 9AM ET on 6/3)

MA Route 106 (short state route where I test out my then new gopro, seen in the bottom. The stabilized video from the gopro didn't turn out so well as I guess all the shaking from my less-secure dashboard mount kept it from figuring out which way was up, so I ended up using footage from my alternate camera)

I tried to record MA-140 and a route consisting of MA-128, Pilgrims Highway, and the freeway portion of the mid cape highway in one go. Only problem was I accidentally set the sharpness setting on my 4K camera to "soft" so it turned out not so good, I ended up posting both the soft footage and sharper but lower res footage from my dash cam as well:

Reuploads:
I finally got around to reuploading these videos after youtube failed to process the 4K version of my 1st upload. Youtube does not allow duplicates and I did not want to delete the original upload so I had to modify the video in some way - I decided that changing the aspect ratio slightly in the metadata would preserve the most quality.

NY I-87 4K60

I also did the same thing for my video of NY NJ I-278/NY I-295, a 2 hour video which also failed to process 4k on 1st attempt

My latest videos are of US-1 in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire:

4K60 Northbound
The most enjoyable part of US-1 for me has got to be the freeway-like portion with the a full median turnaround complete with acceleration/deceleration lanes (I forget what this kind of interchange is called but basically a michigan left without the direct side road crossing)

The southbound video is a composite video of afternoon then morning, there's also some 4K30 footage from my alternate camera due to some equipment issues, plus I make a few more driving mistakes than usual (one caused by a merge sign where there should be an add-lane sign) but nevertheless I think it's also worth a watch  :spin:

I've posted a few more videos in the past 3 months

I-90 From the I-88 interchange in NY to the east end of the I-80/I-90 concurrency in OH
Westbound
Eastbound

US-20 in Massachusetts
Westbound
Eastbound

For newer videos I repositioned the camera:

RI & MA I-295 and RI Route 4

Bronx River Parkway

I also recorded some videos in the game Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) flying at low altitude

Full length of I-5 (!!!) in an A320

I-93 in a Cessna 152

Window view of I-95 from Baltimore to Providence

And a circumnavigation video of American Truck Simulator in busy traffic with 3.5 hours of nonstop freeway driving and zero repeated sections (235 miles of "unique" scenery)

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I'll share one of mine too. Here's interstate 294 in Illinois that I filmed back in September of 2017. I do need to reshoot this given the area has changed quite a bit.

I suppose it is only fair for you to post video of the full length of an interstate in a thread titled Full Length Interstates
I for one have more videos, non of them interstates  :-D:

Taconic State Parkway

US 4 Eastbound. Only the 1st half of the video is in daylight, but the whole video is in 4K and the night portion has its own charm

US 4 Westbound. Available in 1080p only due to youtube being youtube. I've started the reupload process.

Connecticut Route 9, a major highway across the state

Massachusetts Route 105, a peaceful drive across rural parts of southeastern Mass.

US 550 in the game American Truck Simulator, completed following the release of Colorado DLC. I hoped to do I-76 as well but the DLC does not include the trumpet at the east end of I-76 in Nebraska

More to come!

I don't plan on doing time lapses or sped up video at all, and youtube limits the length and size of uploaded videos to 1X hours and 1XX GB.
What I do plan on is releasing more videos right now:

Interstate 79 Southbound:
4K60 Version:
32:9 cropped version which looks better to me:

There's a bit of cleaner residue that I forgot to squeegee, but I use the wipers less than an hour in.
During the last 30 minutes the low fuel light comes on so I slow down to conserve fuel out of an abundance of caution.
I have more videos from this trip coming soon!

MA-104, just a short state route:

I recently adopted a biweekly (twice a week) upload schedule so here are the videos I've uploaded since my last post:
US-20 Pennsylvania Eastbound
Erie, PA Bayfront Parkway and Bayfront Connector (PA Route 4034)
PA I-279
PA I-376
Ohio I-680
MA Route 79 at the tail end of a snowstorm. These are combo videos that include front and side view. I try 2 ways to combine, one where I crop the side view to minimize repeated scenery so it looks better, and the other where both 4K60 videos are combined side-by-side in their full size as my first upload with "8k" horizontal resolution. The front and side view videos are also available separately from links in the video descriptions.
Interstate 79 Northbound
And, my next video Ohio State Route 11. This is the cropped version because the uncropped version doesn't publish today until 9AM EST

This is a metric **** ton of content in the span of a month and there is more to come!  :spin: :spin: :spin:
