Quote from: Max Rockatansky on December 05, 2025, 07:16:54 PMI don't think that I recall a single positive thing ever being said by any of you regarding Reddit.  Kind of makes me wonder why some of you were on there to begin with given how much misery it seems to induce.

Then again, I think it was K12 who made me aware of Reddit even existing.  I'm sure my opinion on said site which I have never used is inordinately molded by exposure to him.
It's the one place on the internet left where it's easy to find forum-like discussion on most topics.

Perhaps that speaks to how antiquated internet forums have become if the only option left is a complete cesspool?

I don't know, I also regularly hear not so great things from AAroads members about Wikipedia and Twitter also.  The only experience I have is with early Wikipedia and it was pretty crappy even a quarter century ago.  I tend to be of the mindset if webpage is making me unhappy then I'll cut it out of places I participate in.  I rather just drop something rather than complain about it elsewhere online.
So, where do people go to get their social fix for niche topics and advice on various problems?  Social media isn't good at doing in-depth discussions and Discord is real-time chat.  Both have the issue of everything being ephemeral, so you're engaged in what's happening "now", it's just a question of whether it's a relative "now" or literally "right now".

To be honest I wonder sometimes how much staying power even places like this long term.  With things like legacy stewardship, John Madden and flat Illinois in recent years it tends make one (at least me) wonder.  What you folks describe with Reddit reads like all that times one hundred.  At least there are alternatives out there for road topics.

So really I don't have an answer for what replaces Reddit.  I guess it seems like a gradual grind to nothing.

Which is depressing.  If I want to discuss road or read discussions on things like Sailor Moon or Star Trek, I have no clue where I'd go.  Ditto for if I need advice for how walk quieter or something, seeing as my downstairs neighbor has seen fit to make a noise complaint when I'm just walking normally.  Regular Google results are so useless these days unless you're looking for a recent article.

As for those like MMM, PoiPoi, etc. - they would have been banned already if our mods were like Reddit mods.  Quite frankly, I'm not sure why they've lasted so long here, either.

A minor thing that bothers me, and likely has no relevance for most here. Trying to use my frequent flyer points for flights for my next international adventure, and day to day, the flights that are available are completely different. Especially since I'm trying to go to a pretty unique part of the world without a lot of flights by airlines that are in an alliance, this makes it very annoying.

I tend to not pay much attention to the darker sides of Reddit, but I know they're out there.

It would be difficult to completely lose Reddit as a reference for obscure information—I have no idea how I would have found out the answer to my question about registration for the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road without it since ~800 people have ever been as far as Nunavut on that road.

Similarly, I have followed a user who posts to r/PassportPorn (SFW, JSYK) on occasion who is from Pitcairn Island—a British Overseas Territory with a population under 50. Reddit is the only place where you can easily get a perspective and information about what life is like in the smallest economy in the world, and to me that is priceless. It's what the internet is all about.

I know that name because of the fact that a third of the men that were on the islands in 2004 were convicted of pretty nasty charges back then.

Heh. My second year of college, the girls in the apartment next to ours said they could hear us peeing because the bathroom walls weren't very thick. Being the very mature college guys we were, we then dragged a chair in there to stand on to make the sound that much louder.

QuoteToilet paper that's too soft to successfully do its job.

My gripe with that is that they tend to clog toilets. That's why I prefer either Angel Soft or the dollar store brands.

women tend to go for the 'super soft' varieties that last only a couple of uses per roll.  Give me Scott 1000 (not just because the stuff is made near here) or a generic equivalent.

I've had better luck with independent forums devoted to a particular interest, like this one.  One for astronomy, one for watches.

Of course, good luck finding them, since Google largely doesn't serve forums in search results any more unless you specifically seek them out, at which point, you don't need Google to discover the forum any more.

I've personally never encountered the dark side of Reddit, but then, I don't have an account, just a bunch of subreddits that I have bookmarked that I check periodically (some, like r/Albany or r/Rochester, every day, and others, like r/HazbinHotel, only when something's happening or I'm bored).

Peeing is obviously not the most interesting sound you hear through thin apartment walls.

I remember an older apartment I had in Alameda, CA.  I rather preferred sleeping in on weekend mornings.  However, the older couple next door had a Special Time Of The Week, Saturday mornings around 7:30-8:00 a.m.  Every single Saturday morning, I could count on waking up to...her.

More technical disasters. I lost the ability to use my YouTube app on my cell phone.

UPDATE; My issue with the phone was simply resolved by restarting it. And my mother cancelled WOW!

So we're back with Spectrum. It may be more expensive, but at least it'll work.

Minor for us, not at all minor for people who travel to attend: We tried to go to Arlington Cemetery today because it was Wreaths Across America Family Pass Day—basically, if you have a family member in the cemetery, you can place a wreath they provide. They made a big deal out of asking people not to rush there early because there were ample wreaths that would be distributed all day.

Uhhh, until they ran out at 1:00. At that point we'd been waiting in stopped traffic for 90 minutes (we moved less than a mile in that time and there were no highway exits to use to bail out), so when we finally reached an off-ramp, we left. There were thousands of cars still lined up on all the surrounding roads at that point. Whoever at the Defense Department handled logistics must have taken the buyout last winter. At least we're local and we only wasted time and gas. People travel from around the country to come for this event. It doesn't seem too difficult: They know exactly how many graves and columbarium niches there are. You order that many wreaths, and then any not distributed today get stored and placed by volunteers next weekend.

And here I was hoping to learn your mother was the one responsible for discontinuing those chips from the '90s that gave everyone the runs.

I have to wonder about the business practices of a company branding itself "Wide Open West" when it doesn't operate anywhere west of the Mississippi, which is the easternmost (and thus among the least popular) of many competing boundary lines for "the West".

Last week I did an annual safety audit on a store which recently reopened from a remodel.  They didn't have several things they are required to have on hand available for the audit like a Safety Data Sheet binder and an installed eye wash station.  Rather than fixing the problems the location supervisor has been blowing up my phone up today asking me not ding him on the audit score.

I did after he found his SDS binder yesterday afternoon.  Thing was he had missed the required annual update and the chemical SDSs didn't match the Authorized Use List.  I added in that I was surprised about the lack of priority regarding addressing a daisy chain and getting an eye wash station installed.
