I wonder how many people who live up north, especially the northeast, snickered at the Texas apparent lack of preparation for snow. And, now, they are staring down at winter warnings and blizzard warnings with the public officials saying "Stay home!!! It's not safe to drive!", not to mention the commercial vehicle restrictions that are being placed in effect. And, these areas are better prepared for winter weather than most of Texas.

Meanwhile out west the big snow storm that hit down to about 3,000 feet above sea level was not all that big of a deal.

Well, it is the size of the storm that's coming into play here...

Agreed. If you get knocked out by a 4-year-old, you deserve to get laughed at. If you get knocked out by prime Mike Tyson, it's a different story.

I've never heard of this feature. How do you do this? I've had the same experience noted above over the past two weeks with Google Maps in Firefox and this sounds like a more convenient workaround than using the mouse to click the correct item in the dropdown when I start typing "maps."

From my perspective, that's not exactly a good analogy as it assumes that North Texas has the same amount of preparedness for winter conditions as New York City. What hit North Texas, including Dallas, is a once-a-year snowfall that would be considered minor by northern climates. I've stated multiple times that Texas does not have the equipment or supplies that would be considered regular equipment where snow can be expected on a daily basis from November to March. What is now being expected in the Northeast is conditions that will go beyond normal expectations.

It's okay, flat landers in Florida can't drive in adverse weather either.

It's not the lack of preparation people laugh at. It's Texas's arrogance and political games regarding disaster preparedness people laugh at.

It seems southern snow / winter weather tend to be more sleet and ice heavy, too.

One of the differences between "childhood" and "adulthood" is how you treat the phrase "snow day". If you interpreted it as a good thing because of no school and out playing in the snow, you are a child. If you interpret it as a bad thing because of no work costing you either a vacation day or a day's pay, or that torturous white knuckle extended drive to work, you are an adult.

Or if you stress over having to find accommodations for the kids because they are not in school, you are an adult.

I suppose that since I work from home, so it doesn't affect me one way or another, I am a child.

When I worked at the casino and used to stress out about attendance and getting to work on time, the relief of having an excuse to take an unplanned day off (even at the expense of a day's pay) also made me a child.

Living in a desert city also makes me a child.

Yes, and...? In the Great Lakes snow belt we laugh at the East Coast almost as hard as we laugh at the South when it comes to their ability to handle significant snowfall (and they are quite a bit better than Texas, to be clear, but they also tend to get a lot more at once).

Speaking of snow, it bothers me that Boston got more snow yesterday than Denver has gotten all winter.

It also bothers me that Boston has more snow on the ground from two storms than upstate NY has from more than a dozen snow events (with some melting in between, but still).

We're at 13.4" all winter and today is a record high.

City fire departments don't usually end up in the mountains fighting fire unless something got out of hand.  Sierra National Forest ended up having FDNY to oversee the Garnet Fire once it reached near 100% containment last year.  Me personally, even though that fire was managed well it was a closer call than I'd like for McKinley Grove.

Didn't say city only -- but then the FD by nature doesn't show up unless there is a need.

The important thing is to not have bad fire departments.

Even still, the more wet a winter is in the mountains the less chance of a really bad wildfire season.  Out in California it has been a pretty decently wet winter and snow levels in the western Sierra Nevada got down to 2,500 feet above sea level last week.  I haven't checked on where the high elevation snow pack is at but I'd imagine it is in decent shape.

I suspect JayhawkCO much like me would prefer the upcoming fire season to not be bad.

More like it is important not to have high intensity fires.  Low intensity fires are a good thing.  The Sequoia trees out here actually need fire to complete their life cycle.
