People who seemingly make up conversational percentage rules on the fly without clarifying information.

"Ever heard of the 20-80 rule?"

"Do you know the 90-10 rule?"

"You must have heard of the 33-33-33 rule by now?"

Human conversations are turning into clickbait and brain rot. Well, at least 42% of the time.

It also bothers me that Boston has more snow on the ground from two storms than upstate NY has from more than a dozen snow events (with some melting in between, but still).

*shrug*

Since we're running away with the Golden Snow Globe again, I'll let Boston have the snow depth.

Knock on wood ...
We need the snow. I don't want fires all summer.
At least you've got good fire departments.
City fire departments don't usually end up in the mountains fighting fire unless something got out of hand.  Sierra National Forest ended up having FDNY to oversee the Garnet Fire once it reached near 100% containment last year.  Me personally, even though that fire was managed well it was a closer call than I'd like for McKinley Grove.
Didn't say city only -- but then the FD by nature doesn't show up unless there is a need.

The important thing is to not have bad fire departments.

Even still, the more wet a winter is in the mountains the less chance of a really bad wildfire season.  Out in California it has been a pretty decently wet winter and snow levels in the western Sierra Nevada got down to 2,500 feet above sea level last week.  I haven't checked on where the high elevation snow pack is at but I'd imagine it is in decent shape.

I suspect JayhawkCO much like me would prefer the upcoming fire season to not be bad.

The longer-term problem is that lack of snowfall also impacts reservoir levels, which has impacts on not just firefighting, but also agriculture and a whole lot of other things.

Most of the more notable wildfires in Colorado last year were caused not by humans, but by mother nature -- either by dry lightning strikes, or heavy winds that either knocked down trees onto live wires or live wires by themselves.  There is no way to avoid those occurrences.

When I was last in Mexico, it was early August.  From the Tampico airport, I walked 400 meters to a bus stop, then took a bus with no a/c, then got off and walked another 900 meters to the intercity bus terminal.  In the midday sun, in Gulf summer humidity.  I was completely drenched in sweat by the time I arrived.  I walked into the bus station, which also had no a/c, bought my ticket, went into the convenience store, and bought a 7-Up.  Man, I was looking forward to that cold, crisp, sugary bliss!  Went out onto the front veranda of the bus station, sat down next to my backpack in the shade, stripped down to my undershirt, twisted the cap off the bottle, and ... *blech!*  Aspartame!  No, no, no, no, no, what have you done, Mexico?  (But all was not completely lost, because some random lady took pity on my scrawny sorry butt out there on the veranda and offered me a big old piece of birthday cake.)

I have a Texas State Parks pass.  It works through the reserveamerica.com site.  To sign in, I have to verify my intelligence by identifying buses, motorcycles, or bridges.  Then I have to get a code through a separate message.  I appreciate enhanced security where it's really needed, but what are they afraid of?  Is some hacker going to make unwanted park reservations for me?  Is that one of the lesser-known scourges of the online world?  It doesn't even save my card number.  If I didn't have a pass, the hacker would have to pay for my unwanted reservation.  I guess it makes it harder for a stalker to find out where I plan to hike.  But I don't get a reservation unless I foresee needing it.  There are occupancy limits, but at most parks you can just show up and get in on most days, so that's what I do (I prefer not to go to a crowded park, anyway).  It just seems like the Internet is being paranoid for me.

As of a few months ago (I'm not sure if it's still happening), the entire internet is being hit with millions of AI bots per day trying to scrape content. For anything that's not a major website (e.g. Instagram has enough capacity to handle millions of users), if the website does nothing about it, the server will be overloaded and will be unusable to anyone, even legitimate users.

Mexican Fanta tastes much better than American Fanta. I didn't notice much of a difference between Mexican and American Coke.

I'm convinced that most of the difference in flavor comes from drinking out of a glass bottle.  I haven't noticed as much of a difference between plastic-bottled soda in Mexico and plastic-bottled soda in the USA as I have between glass and plastic in general.

Interestingly, I think Coke is one of the few sodas that survived the recent Mexican aspartame takeover.

I drank both from a plastic bottle at the restaurant I had them in Coahuila, so that argument wouldn't apply to my experience.

Lake Powell water levels are currently at 3532 feet ASL and trending downward, tracking pretty closely with 2022, when the lake level bottomed out at 3522. The lake level must be at least 3490 for Glen Canyon Dam to generate electricity.

Interesting observation about glass bottles...

Die-hard Ale8One drinkers always swore that the beverage that was sold in 12-oz. longneck returnable bottles tasted different than Ale-8 sold in cans, 20-oz. plastic bottles, and even when 12-oz. nonreturnable bottles were introduced.

Recently, the bottling company discontinued the sale of the traditional 12-oz. returnable bottles.

I never thought there was any difference in the taste of the soft drink in the returnable vs. nonreturnable glass bottles, but lots of people did. There was great weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth when Ale-8 got rid of the returnable glass bottles.

However, Ale-8 in cans definitely tastes different.

Oppression?  The British haven't made laws for Canada for quite a while now and Canada could be completely independent anytime they want to.
