Minor things that bother you

My telltale symptom with influenza has always been a lack of appetite.  However, when almost everyone in my family tested positive for flu last year, and I had symptoms too, but I still had my appetite, I became a lot less confident in my ability to tell them apart (the infections, not my family members).

So, I believe I spent my weekend with (by my guess) Covid, it seemed to break at about 2:00 this morning with me sweating it out in bed.

Considering how scary it was a few years ago, it's somewhat funny that its now become just a weekend illness.

EDIT: Also, the Airborne chewable tablets are unpleasant to take. They had a sour-ish taste, maybe not like a Warhead, but maybe like chewing on a chalky Lemonhead. Not something you want when you're already feeling unwell.
People who self-diagnose, assume it's COVID, and then think it's funny is a minor thing that bothers me.

I've had COVID before and my experience this past weekend felt like that. The point being that, whether COVID or not, what I was experiencing didn't feel severe enough, also being the start of the weekend, to do much more than ride it out.

I'm still pretty sure whatever lingering disease I had going on between December 2019 and February 2020 must have been early COVID.  On the plus side I lost 18 pounds during that time frame and was probably under 10% body fat.
I have a similar story, which I have talked about several times on this forum, but I also got a really strange mystery illness around February 2020. I still suspect that was some kind of early COVID. The other two times I've had COVID were especially mild compared to that and not all that different from the flu.

Manual rest room sinks where you have to keep pushing down the hot/cold water taps every few seconds to keep the water flowing.

Same with the old school sinks with individual hot/cold water tap twist handles that default back to the off position when you let go of the handle.

In either case, it takes at least twice as long to rinse your soapy hands because you have to keep holding or pushing down the tap handles with somewhat soapy hands in order to rinse them.

This may be a repeat entry, but Facebook Messenger is increasingly becoming something that bothers me.

There's no way to sign out of the mobile Messenger app, and certain people will insist on making an audio call via Messenger when you don't answer them in what they presume is an acceptable amount of time.

Ideally, Messenger would allow you to log out of the app/service when you don't want to be bothered, much like the old AOL Instant Messenger/AIM and Yahoo Messenger used to.

Another thing that annoys me is the media's newfound trend to refer to someone who commits suicide as "dying by suicide." What's wrong with "committing suicide?" That phrase was perfectly fine for years, but now all of a sudden it's verboten.

I don't have an opinion on the matter, but the people who push for having that language changed believe the word "committed" implies criminal behavior or is too religious in implication.

Related, I was critiqued by someone years ago for using "committed suicide" while saying it should be obvious why I shouldn't phrase it that way. It did bother me that someone expected me to change my behavior and impkying it was my respobnsilbiity to find out why.

Hey, at least it isn't "self-delete". A few people have started using terms like this on this forum because they don't realize there's no censor here.

Something that bother me is on YouTube when they censor out or warn people about words and images related to death, blood, or guns in the video.

Censoring in general bothers me. I kind of got used to it when I listened to radio but now since I use streaming so much I mean, I don't even know really kids that have censored music. And about the only time I see censored music being streamed is in public places like grocery stores, but even then I've heard the explicit versions of songs played before mostly it's smaller. Mom pop type liberal shops but pretty much anywhere I've seen it. It doesn't bother me at all.

I will say, though it really bothers me when I'm watching a YouTuber who streams themselves and then use his profanity and then edit it out. It's like dude if you're gonna edit it out why even use it in the first place why can't you just talk normally without using profanity? And I say that as someone who has a mouth like a sailor, if you're gonna say fuck, just say fuck and don't fucking censor it.

There's a YouTube channel called Binge101 or something like that that has movie clips and they're usually good clips but they sensor pretty much every cuss word out even I think the word ass they'll censor out. My God that makes me mad.

When the act itself is the intentional irreversible ending of one's earthly existence, any religious or criminal implications suggested by the verbiage seem rather pale in comparison.

I don't know, I've seen people also react if you substitute saying someone "committed suicide" with something like "killed himself."  I ran into that in conversation with someone after my cousin's kid actually did kill himself in 2020 (still shocking as none of saw anything overtly wrong).

Even 30+ years ago some counseling professionals said that it sounded too much like "committing murder."

So they recommended using "completing suicide" or "he/she completed their suicide."

More neutral terminology.

Today I read a Reddit thread complaining about the new Wegmans carts and saw a picture of them.  Yuck!  What is the point of small carts if you're still having to push a giant basket around and put you stuff down low?  I used to lament not having Wegmans around Albany, but right now I'm kinda glad we don't.  It keeps me far away from these things.

"eee-rahn" pretty much exactly matches how the country's name is supposed to be pronounced—i.e. how people who actually live there pronounce it.

The one that grates on my ears, though, is when people take the perfectly-fine "eee-rahn" pronunciation and then shoehorn it into the completely English adjective "Iranian" to make it "Eeerahnian" instead of just pronouncing it like a normal English word.  I'm just waiting for them to replace "Turkish" with something equally wacky like Türkiyeish.

Depends on what it is. In the serious technical threads I usually know what I am talking about.

In the Key Bridge threads I have done a huge amount of research and if anything recent developments have made my original stance even firmer.

In Off Topic a lot of stuff gets thrown around and as long as you don't abuse other people you can say a lot of stuff and not have any big responsibilities to confess 'errors' because it is mostly opinions and riffing and playing and joking and cutting up and stuff that no one needs to retract or correct or apologize about.

My point is just that English doesn't transliterate foreign names in a non-Latin alphabet phonetically. If English were following the native vowel, the spelling would be Eran, not Iran. Since English uses I with the "eye" sound, "eye‑ran" fits English orthography better.
