Interstate 17 Renumbering?
« on: February 22, 2021, 10:28:55 AM »

Wikipedia says ADOT has begun replacing SR 69 exit numbers with I-17 exit numbers so exit numbers will start at 0 instead of 194. Is this true, because there was no source confirming this? And when I Googled it, I instead got several news reports about Massachusetts switching from sequential exit numbers to mile marker-based exit numbers. Does anybody know any information confirming or debunking this claim?

I just saw the new numbers on its Wikipedia page (where they go up to 147 instead of 341). As this is a recent development, a news article should come along eventually regarding the renumbering. At least they aren't insanely high anymore.

I wonder where they got this information?

I drove on I-17 frequently and have seen no evidence of any change in exit numbers.

I just Googled "interstate 17 exit renumbering" and found nothing supporting Wikipedia's claim. Either this was posted by a Wikipedia contributor who works for ADOT and has inside information, or it's another example of misinformation on Wikipedia.

Considering how much backlash ADOT got from even considering renumbering the exits on I-19 there would (IMO) at least been a news reference out there if this was going to happen on I-17.

Without any kind of source, I would probably say the Wikipedia page should be reverted back. I've heard NOTHING about this. And considering ADOT is having enough problems with actual projects seemingly stalled, I don't think they'd dump a bunch of money into changing 150 miles worth of signs for no reason, and messing up every billboard and city along the way.

The Interstate 17 Wikipedia page has reverted its exits back to their existing numbers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_17. There's no explanation on the supposed change in exit numbers, although if such a proposal ever materializes, I would support it 100%.

I wouldn't. It would be a massive waste of money that serves no practical or navigational need.

I won't argue that the I-17 exit numbering (and the reason behind it) is flawed and should start at Exit 1 as opposed to 194. However the numbers have been the same for the last 50 years. In the era of GPS and autonomous vehicles the what the numbers are less relevant now than they were before. They've always been mileage based so they at least serve some purpose.

ADOT also started Loop 303 exit numbers at 100 so ADOT doesn't view this as a big issue.

NE2 has very good standing in the Wikipedia community. If he acted there like he did here, he would be blocked by now.

I believe I-17 and I-19 should have been joined into one interstate from Nogales through Tucson and Phoenix to Flagstaff. Interestingly if you subtract 20 from the current exit numbers you would get the exit numbers if I-17 were extended to Nogales. So exit 194 would become exit 174. The Stack would be exit 180A. Loop 101 would be exit 194 B/C. Loop 303 would be exit 201. AZ 69/ Prescott / Corde Jct. would be exit 242. AZ 260/ Camp Verde would be exit 267. AZ 179/ Sedona exit 278. And interstate 40 would be exit 320.
