Not-so-well graded dirt roads can be even more fun, if that's your inclination.

They don't even have to be lengthy to have fun.  Buck Rock Road was only 4.5 miles but had lots of fun and a notable fire lookout.  I did that drive two weeks ago in Sequoia National Forest.

Is that lookout still manned? Are any of them? 19 years ago, I went up to Bald Mountain lookout, off Sherman Pass Rd, and hung out with the guy in his aerie. Quite a view.

Yes, it is staffed four days a week by Forest Service employees and three days by volunteers.  There are two others nearby above Grant Grove and another off of 180/Millwood Road.
