Why do some dirty (but legitimate) words have cruder swear words in them? For example, prostitute, titillate, assault, lustful

Many have tried (and failed) to rectify that problem, leading to some "clbuttic" mistakes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem

In one of the FIRST Robotics programs there was once a team member position called "Specialist". The forum people used to ask about the game, robots and rules wouldn't accept the word, because embedded in it is the name of a certain (ahem) "performance" product.

The OKCTalk forum has a strict word filter on it, which is really funny/annoying whenever someone needs to mention Wa****a County or the Wa****a River.

Kind of reminds me of the time at work (this is about 15-20 years ago) that I was looking for a Safari plugin to display PDF files within the browser.  A well known plugin at the time could be downloaded from "schubertit.com" (presumably Shubert I.T.).

Turned out that I was re-directed to a nasty-gram web page denying access due to being against corporate policy.

I was puzzled for a bit, then realized that they likely detected the substring "tit" in the URL, and subsequently blocked me.

(Epilogue - I heard nothing about the incident afterwards from above - I'm sure they don't go after people unless there's a repeated pattern.  And I ended up getting the plugin via alternate methods.)

At another forum I modded at, an admin wanted to strike someone who used the word Fuquay-Varina, but I had to intervene that it was a genuine place name. A lot immature users were trying out qay and fuq to bypass the swear filter at the time, so it seemed like a good idea at first...

I really want to call an emergency meeting right now. For those who don't play Among Us (actually, I don't play it either, but I know how it works): everyone votes for one user to eject (i.e. ban from the forum), or votes to skip. If skip gets the most votes or there's a tie between any two (or more) leading options, nobody gets ejected. It's most likely going to be one of two specific prolific users, with HighwayStar being a distant third...

...except in real life, snap elections often go against whoever is proposing them, and I really don't want to risk being banned myself.

Anyone remember the "PC run amok" thread? Of course the PC was running amok; it was thread #32768, causing an overflow. I don't know how I didn't notice it at the time.

That is an oddly amazing coincidence.

Or is it??

The guy who posted that thread I don’t think is known for being subtle enough to sneak something in like under the guise of a rant.  Of course if I’m wrong that’s next level trolling and deserves a tip of the cap.

October 14, 2023 is the date of an annular solar eclipse passing over Texas (map below). It's also the date of Louisiana's gubernatorial election. Is there going to be a conflict?

Not surprised. Some of the high-volume low-quality posters have left (either voluntarily or not).

That, and there's a tendency to have a few threads with lots of posts that run indefinitely, rather than creating new threads for every individual topic. For better or for worse, I'm not sure.

As far as I can tell the eclipse isn't passing over Louisiana so not sure how it would conflict.

People who decide to see the eclipse wouldn't be home for Election Day.

Seems like Louisiana does not have no excuse mail in voting. Not sure how strict they are for traveling purposes.

CO2 by the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. The road itself is named Highway 2, but the state designation was taken off a while ago. There are still signs at intersecting state highways in addition.

Yay Colorado, helping the planet, getting rid of CO2 :-)

This is a 100% real person, but I feel like he should be granted honorary Alanland citizenship, because, well.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Henry Tompkins (or Thomas) Paige Comstock (1820–1870) was a Canadian miner after whom the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada, was named. The Comstock Lode was the richest silver mine in American history.

Referred to by history books variously as a "sanctimonious gaffer", an "illiterate prospector", and a "quick-thinking loudmouth", he was known by his contemporaries as "Old Pancake", because he could not be bothered to bake bread. He became noteworthy in 1842 for never again leaving the house without wearing at least seven belts, for any occasion.

Nevada outside of Las Vegas basically is the real Alanland.

I'm so sad that I've never been able to get good shots of the "Reduced Visibility; When Flashing" warning signs on Interstate 4 in Polk County.
https://www.google.com/maps/@28.1710196,-81.768801,3a,75y,242.64h,94.89t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXIgSLAb0Jtcm2tqHEQQkRQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

I'm also sad that I haven't been able to capture a specific sign on the northern reaches of Ocala National Forest along Florida State Road 19.
https://www.google.com/maps/@29.4578214,-81.7382384,3a,15y,133.13h,89.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sG_iPahtmOGJIbnmz4A1StA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

The traffic circle signs along Florida State Road 17 and Polk County Road 17B south of Lake Wales bums me out too.
