For a while, you could get a DVD or even a Blu Ray player that was pretty close to the size of a VCR.

I have one of those—a Sony Blu-ray player that was the first model of such released commercially in the US. It's bigger than any VCR I've ever owned. It's even bigger than the VCR–DVD combo unit I have downstairs. The thing doesn't really fit the space very well (too big), but it works and the price was right (it was free because my father gave it to me).

Of course, I remember back in grade school how the very primitive VCRs the schools had were as big as a 1990s-era desktop PC (non-tower style).

When I read that, I assumed you meant "size of a VCR" was some movie reference that I didn't get.  It didn't even occur to me that there might be people on here who don't know what a VCR is...

I just assumed there might be because I remember in 2018 when our nephews were riding in my car and they didn't know what the cassette player was. I figured if they hadn't seen an audiocassette player, they might not have seen a VCR either.

If I make a movie reference, it's most likely going to be something fairly obvious or a reference to the South Park movie. There are a lot of fairly popular movies I haven't seen, so for the most part I'm an unlikely person when it comes to making those sorts of references (with some exceptions like quoting Animal House).

We've got three boys between the ages of 10 and 18.  We've watched movies on VHS until recently, and I think we still have the VCR.  But I'm not sure they've ever seen an audio cassette.  Even though I have a bunch of mix tapes, I don't own anything to play them on.  Hmm, maybe ten years ago I could have played them in the car, so perhaps they remember me popping in an old Top Gun soundtrack tape I picked up at a church garage sale...

Just happened to look through my flight history and looks like I had previously flown on one of the planes that the hijackers took over on 9/11. Previously I had flown it from Denver to Dulles on October 16th, 1998. This is the one that ended up being Flight 93 and crashed in Shanksville, PA. Weird to think about.

Years ago, I switched from saying 'pop' to 'soda'.  But I still say 'pop tab' instead of 'soda tab'.  Now I feel like a hypocrite.

Well, it's because you can pop the tab off. You can't soda it off.

That article doesn't make "soda" a verb.

I accidentally clicked on [Calendar] a minute ago, for the first time.  And I saw that tomorrow is Scottb5411's birthday.  I was certain that must be an artifact from Scott5114 getting temporarily locked out or needing to create a duplicate account for some reason.  But no.  Totally different person.  What a weird coincidence!
