Speaking of Walmart, how is it that even with automated checkout lines, they still only have a handful of lines open? I went there for a couple things yesterday and half of the self-checkouts were closed. I don't get how Walmart makes the checkout lines so hostile. I avoid shopping there as much as possible purely because of the checkout experience.

My guess is that they can only have so many self check-out lanes open based on how many people are staffed to supervise the area.  Maybe two people are required for them all to be open, but there was only one?

They were getting burned with people stealing and pared down how many they keep open.  Realistically a cashier can't watch an entire bank and catch everything.

The definition of what "is" and "isn't" a "river" in California is something I find historically odd.  Into the early 20th century was is now Mariposa Creek was named the "Mariposa River."   Likewise what was the North Fork San Joaquin River was at some point renamed as "North Fork Willow Creek."  I've never been able to find a documented reasoning why those two rivers were downgraded to creeks.  North Fork Willow Creek is the primary body of water which feed the Bass Lake Reservoir. 

Sometimes the reverse ends up happening.  In the early 20th Estrella Creek in San Luis Obispo County was designated as a river.  The Estrella River is the primary outflow from the Temblor Range but often lacks surface water for over half of the year.

...get a lot more positive attention and engagement than some posts that I actually put a lot more effort and time into, such as my post about the new I-69 extension in Texas the other day. I've noticed this pattern for a while. Maybe that's just how it goes on the internet.

Sometimes people just want to laugh at something simple. 

Something that isn't funny though is when Oreo cookies give you black bowel movements (AKA black Oreos poops) for a half week.

The more actual information your post contains, the less need there is for the rest of us to add anything or ask questions. 

But also, I have near-zero interest, for example, in highway projects in New England, but both Oreos and poop appeal to a broader audience.

I haven't had that happen to me personally, but I think I'd find it funny if so.

One time, though, I ate a fairly large beet salad at a restaurant and, the next day after using the restroom at work, I thought I might need to see a doctor.  But then I realized that I recognized that particular shade of magenta.

As I learned from having kids, Fruit Loops can make for some interesting colors in the toilet too.

I once had a co-worker who told us that her boyfriend had texted her a toilet pic with the caption, "Check out the green tip on this one."

And, while we're talking about poop, how is it that corn kernels show up in your poop?  Tell me you chewed it up before swallowing it down.  Did your gut reassemble it into kernels or something?

Yes, but don't you chew up your corn first?  Into little bits?  Then how does it come out the other end as whole kernels?  There's some kind of dark voodoo going on in your colon...

I'm usually too busy engaging in conversation at the table to keep track on the extent of my chewing of corn kernels.  I honestly can't recall the last time I had corn that wasn't part of a non-family meal.  To that extent I don't have enough individual meal deal data to accurately answer your follow up question.

The thing that gets me that seemingly nobody in the history circles I'm part of locally has ever noticed.  That seems so strange to me considering the community of "North Fork" was named after the "North Fork San Joaquin River."

On one hand, he was a brilliant and innovative director whose work, unfortunately, went downhill after it peaked with North by Northwest/Psycho/The Birds/Marnie. On the other hand, I find him a bit creepy as a human being in the treatment of certain actresses, although he was always loyal to his wife Alma Reville.
