Between this and the Chuck Norris threads, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's 2012 again.

My wife and I argue over whether a burger is a subtype of a sandwich. She takes the position it is not. I take the position it is, and also the position that she is wrong, which also causes me to take the position of sleeping on the floor.

Burger King takes the position that burgers are sandwiches. If the decree of the Burger King isn't good enough for her, I don't know what would be.

What possible argument is there that a hamburger is NOT a type of sandwich?  You put meat between two slices of bread:  that's about as sandwichy as it gets, isn't it?

I guess that's a decree. Or the seat of power rests with a powerful lawyer in Mattoon, Illinois who has a lot more sway over public opinion.

I'm more inclined to say a hot dog is a taco because of its shape.

A hamburger is 100% a sandwich, but it has enough variations to be its own subtype of sandwich.

I don't see how anything can be a taco if it isn't made out of a tortilla.  Isn't the tortilla part of the definition of 'taco'?

A tortilla is a type of bread, but bread is not a type of tortilla.

If a hard-shell taco cracks in half, does that make it a sandwich?

Ah, see, that explains it. She's Australian, so she'll only listen to Hungry Jack's. I'm only a half-breed, so I'll listen to anyone who agrees with me.

I've never understood the logic behind the name "Hungry Jack's". A guy who claims to be hungry despite owning many burgers is trying to get you to buy said burgers off of him. Seems suspicious.

I think it becomes a salad.

Is a fish sandwich still technically a sandwich?

Why wouldn't it be? You can have a sandwich with no meat at all; a grilled cheese sandwich and a PB&J is still a sandwich. Chicken and turkey sandwiches are a thing so sandwiches can have meat too, and it's not limited to poultry, since I think everyone would say a BLT is a sandwich.

Still?  Did it use to be, but something changed recently?

Both the Dutch precursor to the sandwich—what we today would call an open-faced sandwich—and also what the 4th Earl of Sandwich was reported to enjoy were typically made with roast beef.  However, ham sandwiches are attested at least as far back as the mid-19th Century.

Indeed, the grilled cheese goes back nearly as far.  Here is a recipe from a book published in 1861:

My point, though, in saying that "meat between two slices of bread" is "about as sandwichy as it gets" is that the original sandwich as reportedly eaten by the Earl had meat as its filling.

With all these technicalities in the posts before mine, I just wanted to make sure.  Besides I was being facetious.  :-D
