Quote from: Plutonic Panda on May 13, 2026, 07:53:40 PMFor some reason the ratio of employees to lowkey furry lovers would seem higher in the IT world.

The furry fandom is basically designed to be a welcoming community for kind-of-dorky, socially inept people, especially queer people, who care a lot about the Internet working properly because without it their community would cease to exist. The Venn diagram between that and IT people isn't quite a circle, but there's a longstanding joke that if someone ever blew up a major furry convention the Internet would go down for good within a day.

If anything, I'm surprised we don't have more of them on here. I know we have a half-dozen or so, but I would think there'd be more. Maybe the furries don't get into roadgeeking much because it's too hard to drive a car with paws.

Since I'm into D&D I end up finding out a lot about what the furries are up to secondhand. The D&D and furry communities are more or less next door neighbors. There are a few D&D character species you can choose (tabaxi and dragonborn especially but there are also obscure ones like the harengon) which result in characters that would fit in either. So a lot of stuff ends up going over the fence in both directions.

Not following your own advice, I see.

Also, there does seem to be an overlap between furrydom and car culture more broadly. I guess it just doesn't extend to roads.

Yeah, I have seen some examples of the "sexy posing on fancy car" pinup art out of the furry community.

Maybe I should make a dragonborn who hoards shields and gratuitously spouts info about route numbering rules and control cities so I can wave them over the fence and try and get more furries into roadgeeking.

Wouldn't that make for a lower ratio, not a higher one?

I don't know about the ratio, but the point of the joke is if you took out a big enough chunk of the furries, there simply wouldn't be enough people who knew what they were doing left alive to keep the Internet running.

There's also at least a few roadgeeks I'm aware of who don't really browse (or post) on this forum, and at least one of them is a furry.

That being said, I do have to wonder how many folks on here are furries (or bronies or part of any other related fandoms), given that not all furries on here will necessarily have their avatars set to their OCs.

At college, I won first place for hairiest legs in the freshman class.  Does that count?

No. Being a furry is when you make a fictional character who is a cartoon animal. (Who doesn't necessarily have to have fur at all—they have plenty of dragon and shark characters.)

You should be aware that this comes off like a mean joke making fun of people for liking the things they like.

Not my intention at all.  I was more making fun of myself for being so hairy.

FWIW, I also got first place for knobbiest knees.
