I'm sure some of his opinions are also shaped by the particular demographics of the city we are supposedly discussing. Lots of Haitian refugees in New Orleans...

Doesn't New Orleans also have a history of voodoo?  At least I remember something about it in the third Librarian movie...

There's a voodoo museum there. I'd argue there's more voodoo history there than Miami (and its large Haitian population). See the Disney movie The Princess and the Frog.

Why do people still live in New Orleans?

Because that's where their houses are.

Quote from: MolandfreakSometimes I wonder what would happen if the Army Corps of Engineers gave up on its effort to keep the Mississippi on its current path, allowing it to divert more into the Atchafalaya. How much of New Orleans' economy is dependent on the ports?

The Army Corps of Engineers is largely at fault for why much of the area surrounding New Orleans is steadily eroding away. Sea level rise isn't the problem. The real issue is salt water intrusion.

All of the land in the Mississippi River delta was created by the river periodically overrunning its banks and even shifting its course. The flood water deposited sediment. The fresh water flowing over the sediment allowed plants to take root and thrive. The plants are largely what hold the soil in place. The various dams and levees built along the river bottled up the natural process. Over the decades salt water has crept farther and farther inland, killing off plant life and then eroding away the remaining soil.

I lived in New Orleans when I was in middle school during the early 1980's. It's shocking to me how much the terrain has changed since then. The sights along LA-1 down to Grand Isle look a whole lot different now compared to 40 years ago. There is a lot less land.

Meanwhile New Orleans itself is continuing to sink. The subsidence may not be as severe as what's taking place in parts of Mexico City. But the situation is pretty bad nonetheless. At some point in the not too distant future it will be impossible for anyone to afford home/property insurance there. Some residents may choose to gamble and "go bare" with their coverage. They may be able to get by for a long time or they'll be wiped out if the Crescent City takes a direct hit from a severe hurricane. The cost of insurance coverage will be how New Orleans finally gets depopulated.
