But there is more Road Geeks.
Illinois shows the new route in 1957 but only in its annual report not in its annual work program

And there is more Interstate 63 from 164 to 40 near Brazil and eventually up to 65 near Lafayette. After a toll road study they tried to get it in the Interstate expansion of 1968 .So Indiana didn't get a freeway it still built a 4 lane in the same corridor as Illinois 1. So much so I was told by a planned at I DOT that FHWA thought they were nuts to put IL 1 in the NHS
But almost all the old corridors made it.

Quote from: edwaleni on February 18, 2026, 09:54:54 PMBy 1974 IDOT stopped all work on US-50 abruptly with the 4 lane section north of Xenia. That section was originally going to be 4 lane as part of the Flora Bypass and co-signing with US-45. It never finished. And as you can see, I-64 now appears on the map in the south.

Is the abandoned stretch of pavement south of US-50 near Xenia the original two-lane US-50, or is existing US-50 the original?

(By the way, has anyone ever talked of making Route 161 terminus → Allendale a single state route?  I love that road.)

There are 2 abandoned stretches of the original US-50 4 lane here. One is north of Xenia on the south side of the main 2 lane. There is another north of Flora at the intersection with US-45 along the north side of the 2 lane.

There was supposed to be a trumpet exit facility at Xenia Road, but IDOT clipped to a ground level turn on Xenia Road south to the old ROW until funding was restored.

I havent seen what the final layout was supposed to be at US-45 North of Flora. It appears it was also clipped down to a ground level intersection, but the storm sewers give an indication it was going to be another trumpet with US-45 going over US-50.

When I rode down this route in 1974, after leaving the flashing red at US-45, the road would divide into a four lane and then you were confronted with a flashing yellow with a sign that said "Freeway Ends".

Yes it it was on maps . It took a long time before they finished the Xenia bypass. I also remember Blago had plans to repave and make them four lane again in one plan. It was in one annual and disappeared into the ether. He must have needed something from a legislator.

When Lebanon is done there will only be 3 minor jobs left Carlyle was unavoidable In 1996 It was made 3 lane . Xenia was done in 1989 4 lane
