When official Interstate 685 signs go up, I would imagine they might sign 685 in portions. The Interstate 85-to-NC 62 segment, the NC 49-to-S. Chatham Ave. Ext./Sam Fields Rd. segment, or the Samford Bypass segment could each be the first segments to get signed as 685, once each of these segments are up to Interstate Standards.

NCDOT has announced a series of public meetings regarding "Strategic Transportation Corridor K" which you may also know as Future I-685 (which is not mentioned), an upgraded US 421 Corridor between Greensboro and I-95 in either Cumberland or Harnett Counties. There are 3 alignments up for discussion:
A. Use an upgraded NC 87 south of Sanford through Fayetteville;
B. Build a new alignment for US 421 to Harnett County with bypasses of Dunn and Lillington;
C. Build a 4-lane route east of Fort Bragg that would connect with I-295.
The press release includes a link to corridor 'vision document' with maps and an email to send your own comments: https://www.ncdot.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/2026/2026-10-09-corridor-k-phase-1-open-houses.aspx

I accept and respect your identity as long as it's not dumb shit like "identifying as a vaccinated attack helicopter".

I prefer Alternative 2 and ending at I-295. Converting NC 87 through Spring Lake and Bragg Blvd would be destructive and the Alternative 2 alignment would create a bypass for Spring Lake. The speed limit on the Murchison Road Frwy through Fort Bragg is 55. Not sure if this is mandated by the DOD, or because it dumps into Spring Lake.

I prefer Alternative 1. The Sanford-to-Fayetteville corridor seems out-of-the-way, and 421 would be a more direct route to be an alternative to Interstate 40.

It is Greensboro to Fayetteville for me. Fayetteville needs a direct interstate connection to Greensboro.  Dunn is sort of close to I-40 and with I-95 widening in that area, Dunn don't need I-685 going there as traffic can easily drive up I-95 for a few miles and access I-40 from there.

Speaking of extending I-685 to Wilmington, that is absolutely not needed. I-40 and US-74 (future I-74?) are doing their jobs just fine. They only need to widen US-421 to 4 lane expressway and call it a day. No need for I-685 to go down there.

It's sad that this I-685 to Wilmington meme keeps getting repeated.  But the question here is whether any/all of the Megasites along US-421 "required" freeway access to the Port of Wilmington.  If so, a more northerly approach towards Dunn (Alternative 1, which is quite a bit shorter in total length) is going to be the preferred alternative.  I haven't heard of any such requirements in megasite press releases.  Note that one of those megasites (Vietnamese EV car and battery manufacturer VinFast) has already been cancelled.

This. Also, the I-685 extension to Wilmington was requested by Wilmington MPO.

If the Dunn route is decided, NCDOT can easily extend I-685 a couple of miles southeast to I-40 and end it there. No need to build a parallel interstate along I-40. It'd look ridiculously weird on NC Map.  :-D

If Interstate 685's eastern terminus is eventually at Interstate 40, it should follow NC 55 to Newton Grove.

My Choice Alternate 2 to I295(Looks like it can weave through State Parks east of Spring Lake)... then I-295 can be extended to NC24 if traffic warrants by 2075.
NC24 is 4 lane to Clinton and should be limited-access freeway from Clinton to I-40 in roughly same time line as Alternate 2 being completed.

My choice as well. I'd prefer seeing I-685 heading down to Fayetteville.

Remember this is NC. It's possible if there's support for two of these alternatives then perhaps another interstate route would be proposed. If I-685 were to go to Fayetteville, they could also build the alternative connection to I-95 at Dunn and call it something else, a revived I-495 perhaps?
