Arizona time?  Sure, OK.

Arizona Time?  Doesn't exist.

Work around for me not saying a bad word on the forum "DST."  Oh well, so much for that

They ought to say "MST" instead.

Then again, my wife gets stuff from Idaho that says "MST" even when it's during the summer...

A true pedant would recognize that even "Arizona time" is incorrect because portions of the state observe DST and portions do not. Perhaps "Phoenix time" or "Flagstaff time" or whatever would be the more technically accurate form.

(Of course as a practical matter it's unlikely that business communications would involve the Navajo reservation—but that's not necessarily so, as I once worked on a matter involving someone who lived on Navajo land. Scheduling a conference call there would have required knowing what time it was there, or alternatively being absolutely clear as to what time zone was being used and then relying on everyone to know what their own time differential to that place was.)

In their later years, my dad's oldest sister and her husband lived in Grayson County, which is on the eastern edge of the Central Time Zone. When they wanted to make reference to Eastern time, they said "Louisville time."

Most of my wife's family lived in SW Michigan, but one aunt and family lived in the Eastern Time Zone section of Indiana. When they scheduled the summer family reunion picnic, they had to note that we were eating at X o'clock "Michigan time".

I do this with Mexico now too, now that they got rid of DST.  Where we go, it's in Central Time just like Wichita, but I have to distinguish between them anyway as "Daylight Time" and "Mexico time".

What's your question? Newfoundland Time is half an hour ahead of Atlantic Time. E.g., as I type this, it's 12:45 here in Virginia, so it is 14:15 in St. John's.

Quote from: mgk920 on February 09, 2026, 11:22:44 AM'Time zones' were a 19th century innovation, set up to make sense of railroad schedules. 'Daylight Saving(NO 's') time' was an 18th century idea from Ben Franklin, devised as a way of saving energy (candle wax) by 'saving daylight', but first widely adopted in the 20th century as a WWI wartime expedient.  Now, why does the USA military (especially the USNavy) use 24h 'Zulu' time?

Mike

Is this is a rhetorical question?  The military uses Zulu time because they operate all over the world in operations that often need to be coordinated in time and they really don't care what the time zone is in whatever country they're in.

Also of course the Navy has the tradition of chronometers set to GMT to determine longitude while at sea.  Dava Sobell's book Longitude is a pleasant read about how longitude by chronometer and sun observation was invented. (I wonder if they still teach midshipmen how to do that, just in case the electronics get messed up.)

Ninja Terminator is the great film produced during the 1980s ninja craze.  This particular scene is probably ranks among my top ten favorite movie clips of all time.

I forgot how good Galaxy Quest actually is.  I saw it on TV today and decided to give it a rewatch.  The cast is stacked and it is probably best live action movie Tim Allen was involved with.
