What's the issue? I have lived in both very blue and very red counties. The only time county politics have ever affected my life (beyond a double digit number of tax dollars per year) was during Covid.

Without diving too deeply per TOS, it's not necessarily the politics itself, more the attitude of the fine people of Douglas County. Lots and lots of new money there, which leads to a lot of entitlement and attitudes that I don't agree with. I went to high school there and still work there occasionally.

This isn't necessarily a "population" thing, but this was the closest thread I could think of to post this in.

The last president of the US that wasn't alive at the same time as Herbert Hoover was Abraham Lincoln.

Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, to John Adams, in three moves.

1735–1826  —  John Adams
1808–1875  —  Andrew Johnson
1874–1964  —  Herbert Hoover

b. 1942  —  Joe Biden

For a second I was going to say "What about Obama?" but Hoover lived a lot longer than I thought he did, dying when Obama was a preschooler (I was thinking he died not too long after his term ended, but that was Coolidge).

Recent presidents nowadays can live well into their 90's thanks to the Cadillac health care they get. Without that, Clinton would've taken his dirt nap in his 70s thanks to his diet. Trump too, for that matter.

Really?  I thought I heard that Trump is actually unusually healthy, especially considering the awful diet he eats, the short hours he sleeps, and the workaholic ethic he inherited from his dad.

He's also apparently 6'3" and only 225 pounds or something insane. Methinks someone told a fib.

Jimmy Carter is the longest-lived ex-president, both in age and longevity post-office. He made it to 100 years and 89 days. Hoover was the silver medalist at almost 32 years, followed by Ford at just short of 30 years.

When I was in eighth grade, I looked at Presidential longevity.  I found that the younger a President took office, the time he lived after his term(s) was actually (slightly) lower.

Ford would have made the record had he not been senselessly mauled by a circus lion in a convenience store.

Sometimes I wonder if not in the not too distant future, Huntsville, Alabama, where I live, surpasses St. Louis, Missouri as far as city limit population. One was a small town almost 80 years ago, the other one of the top ten cities in America by city limit population.

Probably, St. Louis is dying faster than Huntsville is growing.

In 1877 St. Louis voted to separate city and county, probably the most short-sighted move a city has ever made. The independent city acts as its own county under Missouri law. The only other place that this structure is widespread is in Virginia.

It would take an awful lot for the Cardinals to leave Saint Louis as the city continues to lose population. However, the Blues NHL team might be another story.

Isn't Kentucky also similar, being a commonwealth state like Virginia?
May or may not be batticorn.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

No, aside from the merged Louisville-Jefferson County, cities are within counties and not separate.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

I don't expect the Blues to leave St. Louis anytime soon. The city of St. Louis may be hemorrhaging population, but the metro area as a whole is not. And the Blues still draw well, even when they're not any good.

Road Hog is absolutely right that the city of St. Louis separating from the rest of the county was a terrible decision in hindsight. In 1877 what is now St. Louis County was still rural and relatively unpopulated and the city didn't want its tax dollars being spent out there, which is kind of ironic because now St. Louis County steadfastly opposes re-consolidating with the city for the same reason. I personally think this is kind of short-sighted, because St. Louis City continuing to wither on the vine does not help the County in the long run. St. Louis City would like to merge with the county again, but the county wants none of it and Jefferson City won't force the issue, because they don't want to upset St. Louis County voters. For that reason St. Louis City and County becoming one again is one of those things that really should happen but probably never will.
