PennDOT - District 9 News: Shapiro Administration Invests Over $209 Million in Laurel Highlands

Today, officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced PennDOT will invest over $209 million in 50 projects anticipated to start during the 2026 construction season, and three projects that will continue in 2026 in the six-county, Laurel Highlands region. These investments support Governor Josh Shapiro's vision of a safe and reliable transportation network that connects people to opportunity and each other.

This investment includes rehabilitating, reconstructing, and resurfacing 105 miles of highways and working on 89 bridges. Under Governor Shapiro's Administration, 19,451 miles of roadway have already been improved statewide, and work has advanced on 1,738 state and local bridges.

"Each new and continued project plays a vital role in supporting safe and efficient travel, both for the residents of our region and those who are traveling through," said District 9 Executive Vince Greenland. "These projects support our economy and enhance our communities by providing transportation options for residents and shipping routes for area businesses to grow and thrive."

Overall highlights in the 2026 construction season for District 9 (Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties) include:

Approximately 105 miles of paving.
Approximately 89 bridges will be repaired or replaced.
Approximately 396 miles of roadway will be seal coated.
Notable projects that will continue this year include:

Blair County:

Route 3013 (Dunnings Highway) over Dry Run and Blair Gap Run bridge replacements in Blair and Allegheny townships, $5.4 million.
Fulton County

Interstate 70 eastbound resurfacing, Amaranth to Bedford in Bethel, Brush Creek, and Union townships, $19 million.
Somerset County

U.S. 219, U.S. 30 to North Somerset resurfacing in Jenner, Lincoln, Quemahoning, and Somerset townships, $26 million.
Notable projects that are expected to begin this year include:

Bedford County

U.S. 30, Breezewood to Everett resurfacing in Everett Borough, East Providence Township, and West Providence Township, $14.2 million.
U.S. 30, Scenic Road to Pitt Street resurfacing in Bedford Borough, $6.1 million.
Route 4009 (William Penn Road), Quaker Valley Road to Brumbaugh Road resurfacing in Bedford and Saint Clair townships, $2.3 million.
Blair County

Interstate 99, Sproul/Claysburg to Newry Pulloff resurfacing and bridge rehabilitations in Blair, Freedom, and Greenfield townships, $24 million.
Route 453 (Jaynesville Pike), Interstate 99 to Beastons Road resurfacing and slope stabilization in Tyrone Borough and Snyder Township, $8.4 million.
Route 36 (Logan Boulevard), U.S. 22 to Plank Road resurfacing in the City of Altoona, Hollidaysburg Borough, Allegheny Township, Logan Township, and Frankstown Township, $5.5 million.
Route 866 (High Street & Piney Creek Road), Williamsburg Resurfacing in Woodbury Township and Williamsburg Borough, $2.6 million.
Cambria County

U.S. 22, Route 164 to Blair County Line resurfacing in Cresson and Munster Townships, $11.6 million.
Route 756, Alvin Street to Industrial Park Road resurfacing in Geistown Borough and Richland Township, $9.5 million.
Route 3104 (Mount Airy Drive) over U.S. 219 bridge replacement in Richland Township, $2.3 million.
Route 160 over Otto Run and South Fork Branch bridge replacements in Wilmore Borough and Adams, Croyle, and Summerhill townships, $3.5 million
Fulton County

T-313 (Hill Road) over Tributary to Sawmill Hollow Run bridge replacement, $1 million.
Route 655 over Barnett's Run bridge replacement in Belfast Township, $850,000.
Huntingdon County

Route 655 (Big Valley Pike) over Tributary to Mill Creek culvert replacement in Brady Township, $1.4 million.
Route 994 (Old Plank Road) over Tributary to Great Trough Creek culvert replacement in Todd Township, $800,000.
Somerset County

U.S. 219 Boynton Bridge Replacement in Elk Lick Township, $2.3 million.
Route 3029 (Copper Kettle Highway) over Middle Creek bridge replacement in Milford Township, $1.4 million.
Route 2001 (Oak Dale Road) over Laurel Creek bridge replacement in Elk Lick Township, $1.4 million.
As construction projects are underway in the region, the traveling public can anticipate seeing many work zones and are urged to keep in mind their safety and the safety of highway workers. When encountering a work zone, drivers are reminded to drive the posted speed limit, turn on their headlights, pay close attention to signs and flaggers, and avoid all distractions.

District 2: US 22 Business at East Charles Street in Lewistown

QuotePennsylvania Department of Transportation District 2 (PennDOT) is proposing to remove two adjacent bridges carrying SR 3006 (South Juniata Street/Business 22) over the SR 3002 (East Charles Street) interchange in Lewistown Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. In lieu of replacing the bridges, an at-grade roundabout will be constructed, SR 8005 (interchange ramps) will be removed, and SR 3002 will tie in directly to the roundabout. Sidewalk, new guide rail, and intersection improvements will also be incorporated. Finally, work will include preserving the bridge carrying SR 3006 over Kishacoquillas (Kish) Creek immediately to the north. The scope of work is to reset rocker bearings, replace strip seals, repair concrete, and apply an epoxy overlay.
