The 63 kilometer Lucknow - Kanpur Expressway opened to traffic today. Lucknow is a city of 2.9 million and Kanpur 2.5 million.

A weird situation arises with the intersection with the Ganga Expressway. Because it was built by different governments, they couldn't agree on constructing an interchange between the two expressways, which is very much needed, because traffic from these cities cannot access the Ganga Expressway directly.

Maybe this will be a great opportunity to build the first freeway-to-freeway roundabout. Seen it postulated, but not in the field yet.

Freeway-to-freeway roundabouts were common in the Netherlands during the 1950s and early 1960s. Some of them still exist, though flyovers have been built.

The UK still has many motorway-to-motorway interchanges with roundabouts, though usually at least the main direction has overpasses.

The final section of the DND-KMP Expressway opened to traffic on August 23. This expressway links Delhi to Faridabad and points south (it feeds into the Delhi - Mumbai Expressway).

This is a six lane elevated highway along the banks of the Yamuna River.

Eww, that's gross. The circumference of a motorway roundabout needs to be much larger, maybe even a half-mile just to allow traffic to keep speed.

That's a beautiful freeway, but why are these freeways so empty in the biggest cities of India?
