Speaking which, I did open a meet thread for October with Big Sur.  It would be a shame to have the road close again and we never have a hobby gathering out there.

Note that not everyone follows the Meet threads (I certainly don't). For regional things, you should also post something on the regional board.

That's the plan, I just want to refine the itinerary before I cross post it to Pacific Southwest.  I'll probably get it done before the week is out.  I have to post it on the Facebook Road Meets group also.

But if you are still in the planning stages, you should still do a post pointing to the Roads Meet board post. That way, people can hold the date and help refine the planning.

Based on the pictures that I saw and I'm no engineer it seems like there's already some erosion that looks somewhat concerning. I think they're definitely gonna have to make a decision within the next decade or two about whether or not we're gonna come up with an alternative to reroute this be a tunnel or whatever or just close the section of the road off. I don't see the ladder is being a very smart idea, especially as mentioned for fire escape reasons.

Tunneling will probably happen eventually, similar to Last Chance Grade.

Possibly not. The distance is much greater, and the mountains in the area have a very different composition.

I guess we'll see if this just a normal winter closure or not after this storm passes.  At least this is south of the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

I'm really hoping this is just a case of a rockslide onto the roadway, not the roadbed becoming the rockslide  :wow:  :-o

As of the moment the QuickMap just mentions debris on the roadway.

Looks like this indeed a temporary closure:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HIGHWAY 1 ON BIG SUR COAST REMAINS CLOSED NEAR REGENT'S SLIDE

MONTEREY COUNTY – A 6.8-mile segment of Highway 1 near Regent's Slide remains closed due to ongoing debris cleanup as a result of ongoing winter storms.

Highway 1 is currently closed from two miles north of Lucia, to one mile south of the Esalen Institute. Message and directional signs are in place to alert travelers in advance of this closure.

The slope above the roadway at Regent's Slide remains stable. However, the catchment area at the base of the slope has filled with debris that has eroded during recent rains. This erosion activity is an expected outcome following recent slide repairs and will continue as the slope seasons over time.

At present, debris in the catchment area has overtopped the concrete barriers on the northbound shoulder, allowing debris and rocks to travel directly on to the highway.

Crews will begin to clear debris from the catchment area during upcoming breaks in the rain. This cleanup effort is dependent on weather and site conditions. Updates will be provided as work progresses and at present there is no estimated time for a full reopening.

Road information and updates can also be found on Caltrans District 5 Social Media platforms: Twitter at: CaltransD5, Facebook at: Caltrans Central Coast (District 5) and Instagram at: Caltrans_D5.
