  • New Jersey does not appear to have any speed cameras.
  • New Jersey does not seem to have tried to compete with California and now Oklahoma on ridiculous 3di numbering.
  • New Jersey has not been enthusatic about decommission US routes paralleled by an interstate?  Pretty sure several other states would have axed US 46 and US 22.

It's been almost a year since I posted this and inquiring minds want to know. Can someone explain this one? Is there a central community that the map is just leaving out?

No. There is no such thing as unincorporated land in NJ. Every square inch is under a municipal jurisdiction (city, town, village, borough, township). I guess they just lacked creativity in Cape May County. The community that you're wondering about is Cape May Courthouse and is unincorporated within Middle Township.

  • NJ has one of the only examples of a "Ghost Island Merge" bifurcated double-lane on ramp in the USA (for now :spin: ), even if it uses a physical island instead of a painted one https://maps.app.goo.gl/rKQA1GQHNLfH4RhE8?g_st=ic
  • NJ has one of the founding states for E-ZPass
  • NJ Turnpike has one of few examples of long-distance truck and car lanes in the USA
  • NJ was one of the first states to massively use intelligent transportation systems, including variable speed limits
  • I get to say "fill 'er up" like in the old days 😂
  • I like trains
  • Despite the low posted speed limits in general, there isn't actually a statutory cap on how high the DOT can post limits (other than doubled fines for 65 zones)
  • NJ has some of my personal favorite bridges and tunnels in the USA
  • Jughandles *hides* :ninja:
  • NJ has some of the highest varieties of places to explore with cool elevators 🤓 (yes, if you couldn't tell by my username and profile I'm also an elevator enthusiast)
I can drive 55 ONLY when it makes sense.

Not only that, they're specifically outlawed in the NJ State Statutes.

Yep! NJ only has 3 speed limits in their laws for statutory limits, meant for roads without signed limits: 25, 35 & 50. There's no maximum limit printed in the statutes. Even the 65 limit referenced is for a study of 65 limits, and as you mentioned double fines when that limit is posted. But if NJ wanted to raise their limit to 70, they could technically post it.

I wonder if NJ could be coaxed into signing 70 if the law were amended to have fines doubled with speed limits of 65 or higher rather than just 65.  I'd even love to see the NJ Turnpike get the Maine treatment and raise the 55 section to 60.

New Jersey has many Diners.
New Jersey has many boardwalks with games and amusements.
New Jersey has the infamous Jughandles for making left turns.
New Jersey has redundant left turn signals.
New Jersey has no DDIs😀.
New Jersey always had three freeway guides at each interchange. A 1 mile, Next Right, and at ramp diverge.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Goodness Dangit that's reason 3 for me to visit this state once again so I can update my ideal speed limit map (if probably put 65 w/ VSL there but I'll save that for fictional). 😂

Currently they are:
  • To investigate the ghost island merge for my not-yet-official FDOT pet project
  • To finally use my SunPass PRO in E-ZPass territory

Technically, NJ can manually do that by designating a roadway as a safety corridor (automatic doubled fines). To be on the safe side of the law, if I were an engineer there approving a speed limit above 65, I'd recommend considering that.

Well, the entire New Jersey Turnpike is VSL so there's half of it.  But it also means that if they were inclined to do it, it probably would have been done.  Of course, it arguably functions like that already, given that everyone knows there's little/no speed enforcement on the road and people drive fast as a result.  Going 55 (or 65, on the portions that are 65) is a good way to get run off the road - to the point where some people prefer to take the cars/trucks/buses lanes instead of the cars only lanes because they find the traffic calmer.
