As somebody who has literally never owned a GPS device and has never used one on a road trip, it irritates me when people talk as though route numbers and guide signage no longer matter.

Nope, not a luddite.  I used to have a smartphone, but I got rid of it years ago because I lacked the self-control to stop watching YouTube all the time instead of interacting with my family.  And I've never owned a sat-nav device because I never saw the need for one.  Even when I had a smartphone, I didn't use it for navigation while except for navigating a neighborhood I'd never been in and I could remember all the turns to someone's house.

I'm honestly surprised there aren't more people on the forum who eschew GPS devices.  A dozen years ago, we had this conversation:

I could maybe see this argument being reasonable if the most widely-used GPS navigation program on the planet weren't owned by a company who has a track record of intentionally making its products worse if they think that will increase the amount of time people spend using them, and thus see more ads. Oh, and the same company also has a track record of abruptly shutting down widely-used products for unexplained reasons.

Your GPS app works to get you where you need to go in 2026. Do you have any guarantee that it will in 2031?

I only use GPS at the ends of my trips in unfamiliar locations. I typically have a good idea on where the major routes go which typically gets you 95% there.

I use Apple Maps.

I think the only time I attempted to use actual GPS routing was on a trip where I-287 was unexpectedly closed, but Google didn't know about that, so it ended up being useless.  It had also marked US 202 as closed, even though it wasn't, and the local roads didn't look easy to navigate if you didn't know where you were going.
