A contractor, as a prank, installed replacement I-5 markers near Monterey Park, California with the Chinese/Japanese symbol for number 5:


A senior engineer who is also a huge anime otaku noted that kanji is not helpful to most motorists, and romaji ("go") should be used instead so drivers can pronounce it, for emergency calls and whatnot.

That decision was not popular either, and after a flurry of phone calls, news reports, angry tiktoks about "Interstate Go", etc. the D7 commissioner decided "to hell with it, we'll relinquish this section of I-5."

State route spade markers went up, and lasted about a day, because demoting to a state route still left it a CalTrans problem, so they replaced the state markers with the green circle you see today.
