What is the proper way for a cyclist to turn left at an intersection?
Go to the car dealer on the right side of the intersection and buy a car.

What is the proper way for a cyclist to turn left at an intersection?

Everything Tony Hawk does, but with a bike

kphoger

1.  Approach the intersection as close as practicable to the righthand edge of the roadway.

2.  Dismount.

3.  If the intersection is controlled by pedestrian signals, then press the detector button and wait for cross-traffic to receive a red light.  Otherwise, wait for a break in traffic.

4.  Push the bicycle, as hard and fast as possible, diagonally across the intersection, so that it continues in a somewhat straight path to the opposite curb.

5.  Walk across one of the streets, waiting for the WALK signal first if pedestrian signal control is present.

6.  Walk across the other street, activating and waiting for the pedestrian signal if one is present.

7.  Right the bicycle, mount, and continue riding.

Wait for the light to turn green for the cars directly in front of you. Green means go, right?

Assuming that you're simply behind another vehicle waiting for the light to change, that's the actual way of turning left at an intersection.

Lets say that you are facing north, and want to turn west. You want to wait until that cars going south start moving, then take your turn.

If they're a cyclist, then they've already turned left.

If the cyclist does not wish to stop, they must signal their intentions by using juggling pins for a minimum of fifteen seconds. A dropped pin denotes a cancellation of the desired turn.

Answer either of these two questions:

1.  Why should US road signage switch to metric?

2.  Why shouldn't US road signage switch to metric?

....

It would allow politicians the opportunity to say they created jobs because of the need to replace all those existing road signs, or alternatively to modify them using stick-on numbers.
"You know, you never have a guaranteed spot until you have a spot guaranteed."
—Olaf Kolzig, as quoted in the Washington Times on March 28, 2003,

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

2.  Why shouldn't US road signage switch to metric?

We shouldn't switch, but we should metricize our current units to get the advantages of the metric system.

I propose we start basing all our distances on the existing yard. We'll eliminate feet and inches in favor of deciyards and centiyards, and in place of miles we'll use kiloyards.

Then we'll switch out all the signs, which of course will cost many gigadollars.

Edit: took out the discussion of the meaning of giga in US versus Europe because it was wrong.

Because I-95 is still the same in metric.  So is I-70, except in metric it might actually go to Baltimore.

That would involve switches, which everyone knows wastes the electricity bill even more, which is why nobody is switching.
