Interestingly, this is not a case of the sign having been rotated 90° on the post, but rather the image having been rotated 45° on the sign.

I've seen this one posted in the field, but downhill instead of up:

On the sign you posted a photo of, the bottom line is parallel to one of the sign's edges.  On the MUTCD sign, it is not.

That's right. The sign was printed 45 degrees askew. I'm guessing the installers realized that, but just had to make the best of it.

I'm also pretty sure this sign was eventually replaced with a correct one, according to another forum user, but I can't confirm that until the road (WA 504 near Mt St Helens) reopens in 2027.

The old auto trail designations are a perfectly cromulent way to identify roads, particularly now that we rely on satellite navigation for directions.

US 41's southern terminus should be the 41/43 junction north of Green Bay, because I-41 overlaps it to the south. You don't need both, and I-41 really fits the grid (and it's the only decent new interstate we've had in over 40 years)

US 41 still would exist in 2 states, so it could stay a US route.

Interstate 70 should be truncated solely to the portion within the City of Baltimore because of that route's historical importance to that city. The rest of what is now I-70 can be numbered as a 3di. I-370 is already in use in Maryland and I-170 is in use in Missouri, but I-570 is not yet in use anywhere, so the entire route from the Baltimore city limits to Cove Fort will become I-570.

Yes, but not in the way you think. All control cities from LA are to be renamed "Thru Traffic." Sacramento, San Diego, San Bernardino, and others will be referred to as Thru Traffic, CA.
