NM-172 is pretty far up toward the top of my bucket list, along with TX-128.

I don't know, man.  From the looks of it, you should actually be able to see the mountains from at least half of that route.

Fine, fine. NV-612.
There is something nice about a suburban area with mountains in the distance, isn't there?  It's one of the things I love about driving in the Hudson Valley.

The abandoned retail stores, barbed wire at the air force base, and smells from the sewage treatment plant all add to the experience.

Q:  What state route in the USA has the best scenery?

NC-149.  Used to be incredible scenery (somewhere) until they hauled some of it to this pulp mill.

I assume the OK sections are about as lovely as I-40, but AZ?

AZ 66 and Oatman Highway have some pretty top-notch high desert scenery.  Even the historic segments of US 66 obliterated or replaced by I-40 on the Colorado Plateau look pretty nice in vintage photos.

I see that as a feature and not a bug.  Polar bears encourage constant vigilance and promote time efficiency.
