I used to drive a delivery route all over southern Illinois, and the trucks we used were Isuzu cab-over turbo diesel box trucks like this.  I could drive with the pedal completely to the metal, and my top speed would be somewhere in the 68–71 mph range.  Once, on a long downhill with a strong tailwind, I managed to hit 77 mph.  One time, someone called in to complain about my driving;  the caller exaggerated by saying I was going 80 mph, my boss knew the trucks couldn't even go that fast, so he just dismissed the complaint as silly.

Further back in my memory, I remember a high school classmate in the 90s who had an old Suzuki Samurai.  One day, we got a running start at this steep half-mile downhill, with a tailwind, and the pedal to the metal.  We topped out at 70.
