Quote from: DTComposer on September 22, 2025, 05:40:53 PMI am pretty sure Portland was listed on a mileage sign on I-5 just north of Stockton, which would be about 620 miles, but I haven't driven that stretch in a while.

Found the Portland sign (628 miles) on I-5 just north of CA-12:

Heh.  We're talking early 1980s for when I first saw it, so it sorta predates GSV. :D

Yeah, looks like farthest in Utah is 511 miles for Reno.

Quote from: Roadgeekteen on September 21, 2025, 10:19:38 PMFor Boston, it's probably in the Albany area for I-90. There might be a further one in Northern New England but I haven't seen one

For New York, it's probably in Youngstown for I-80. It's further than NOVA.

Do not include novelty signs like the ones at the beginning of US 20

I created a thread for this requiring that the city be "consistently posted". https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=26802.msg2527026#msg2527026 I believe that I require "36% of the signs listing more than one city". This was meant to drive out novelty signs and "posted just once before a junction".

This thread is meant for individual cities thought, not the whole country/world.

If that's the case, Los Angeles is either continuously posted or at least frequently mentioned from the North (I-5 and CASR-99, East (I-40), Northeast (I-15), Southeast (I-8 and I-10), and Northwest (US-101) at over 400 miles. I'm pretty sure that the most of the signs in Baja California mostly list distances to Tijuana, So, not LA from the "South" (even though Baja really southeast). It also has novelty signs in Honolulu and Tokyo (unverified in Sydney).

Cheyenne, Salt Lake, and Denver (and for that matter Boise and Reno) are "Big Cities that pop up at great distances in all directions".

This got me wondering what the farthest away Tijuana is signed.

I found this one for 1161 km, leaving Loreto.

... Almost as far away as Portland along I-5. Does Fed-1 go all of the way to the cape (or even around it)? If I've been on it near the cape, it wasn't for very long. I've been on it for a few km in Ensenada while on a shore tour.

Yes, its southern endpoint is in Cabo San Lucas.  I couldn't find any mileage signs south of Loreto that listed Tijuana, though.  Loreto is a major control city, so I had to pick a spot north of there before I could find Tijuana on a sign.  If anyone can find one farther south, that would be pretty cool, but I don't know that there is one.

By the way, Mexico City gets used as a control city from pretty far away.  For example, I'm familiar with this sign in the northern suburbs of Monterrey—which, depending on how you measure, is about 900–950 km from the Mexico City limit.

It's not as impressive, but Guadalajara shows up at least as far out as just outside Puerta Vallarta.

Those two cities aren't even in different states.

Heck, on our honeymoon, we took a leisurely day trip from not too far from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila, with time for the José Cuervo distillery tour, and then back again, making it back in time for supper.
