Is This Too Far?

Aren't exit guides to be placed at the start of the deceleration lane?

This one is placed way too far from the actual ramp departure IMO.  I thought the MUTCD has guidelines that strictly govern placement of signs.

I don't know the rules, but it looks wrong to me. I can see wanting to warn of a 15mph ramp well in advance, but instead of a diagonal arrow, it should say 1/2 MILE. I can see someone in a snowstorm plowing into the guardrail.

Dude, you are the king of underwhelming.  With a bait headline like this thread title I was hoping for something more exciting than a nominal MUTCD gripe.

I've noticed that New Hampshire puts their exit arrow sign well before the point that Massachusetts would. I don't have that much experience with other states.

Interestingly enough, it used to be worse - the exit 146 sign used to be placed at the Country Ridge Rd overpass and was followed by a 2-mile sign for the South Midway Service Plaza, but ~2020-2021 the positions were swapped when the signage was replaced. Definitely a weird sequence prior to that (and evidently the PTC agreed).

I'd say this one is worse. It's nine-tenths of a mile from that sign to the first of the two actual exit points and 1.1 miles to the second one (which exit point is open at any given time depends on which way the Shirley Highway reversible lanes are pointed at the time). It seems to me that sign should have a "Left lane" banner at the bottom or something similar other than an arrow. Both ramps also have their own overhead exit signs when you reach the actual exit locations.

In the location roadgeekteen mentions, I notice the hill immediately to the right of the road as you near the exit point. Maybe they deemed the terrain unsuitable for a ground-mounted sign of that size through there, as I see the sign is located on a flatter area?

That's just to manage traffic better by getting people into the lanes earlier...

I don't necessarily disagree with that in principle, but it seems like there are better ways to do that than to use an exit arrow. And not an Exit Only sign, either, because you can use that lane without exiting—it goes on through the next interchange and emerges on the left side of the highway.
