Several ATVs towed, 1 arrested after calls over street racing, reckless driving in Dallas, police say
QuoteOne man is facing charges, and nearly a dozen ATVs have been impounded after Dallas police responded to multiple scenes involving street racing and reckless driving in the winter weather.

Now, the department is warning drivers to stay off the roads as hazardous conditions continue under an extreme cold warning.

DPD said on Sunday, its Street Racing Task Force and patrol officers responded to Deep Ellum just before 2:30 p.m., after receiving multiple calls about ATVs racing, reckless driving and intersections being blocked.

Meh, if everyone else is staying off the road because of the weather then I don't particularly care if the OHV crowd goes out for some fun.  I'd be lying if I didn't say I used to do the same thing during winter storms in Michigan and Connecticut.

Around these parts, people don't stay off the road, though.  And then you have the plows trying to do their jobs.

It is hard to get all up in a safety rage over a 23 year old out doing donuts in an empty intersection with their kid.  The weapons charge seems serious but doesn't have much detail in the article.  Likewise ATVs out with no license plates or current registration seems not all that notable.  It would be nice to know what exactly is being considered racing so I could actually develop a more informed opinion about it.

I don't know, aside from the weapons thing this all seems like stuff I was doing or I did with my dad when I was younger in winter storms.  These people "shouldn't" have been doing any of it in a big city if you're looking to avoid trouble but not exactly newsworthy.  I lived in some fairly rural areas when I was younger and I kind of feel like this kind of stuff was way more tolerated.

Isn't any winter storm in Dallas pretty much above average?

I haven't been paying attention to the 2026 winter storm thread aside when Bruce suddenly mentioned the west coast.  I'm gathering the insinuation in the article is that Dallas issued a stop-travel order?

I'm not exactly surprised about the ATVs not being licensed or not registered, that is fairly common for the OHV crowd.  Had they been registered/licensed were the owners subject to a citation?  I'm kind of gathering that they wouldn't have been since there doesn't seem to have been a citation for reckless driving (aside from the donuts guy in the car).

This is what the article says specifically about the ATV riders:

About an hour later, the task force and officer responded to another call concerning ATVs in the 200 block of July Alley. Police said seven ATVs were found illegally parked in the area and did not have license plates. They were all impounded.

Officers received additional calls about racing in the 800 block of South Riverfront. When officers arrived at that scene, three ATVs were towed for being unregistered and transported to the Dallas Police Auto Pound.

"While our officers are working around the clock responding to hazardous winter weather, choosing to street race is not just reckless, it's dangerous and irresponsible. This behavior puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated in Dallas," Dallas Chief of Police Daniel Comeaux said in a statement.

DPD said it will continue to address any calls about reckless driving that puts the safety of residents at risk as the department works to reduce traffic hazards across the city.

Which plows exactly are running in Dallas? All four of them? And they're apparently going to be plowing side streets?
