I rented a car a week or so ago that had a pushbutton start. It didn't bother me, except for the fact that I was kind of afraid I'd accidentally lock the fob inside the car because I didn't have a good place for it while I was driving.

Some of those vehicles don't allow you to lock it inside the vehicle, whether intentionally or by accident. Many vehicles have a setting to prevent locking due to a proximity sensor while the engine ignition is off; the vehicle will momentarily try to lock but then correct itself by unlocking. For other vehicles, it's a setting to enable or disable.

To be fair, I'm not a fan of testing this out unless I know I have access that other key fob. But used to get customers who actually kept their spare key in the car and were puzzled why their vehicles wouldn't lock. (No, not one customer...several, like one of these complaints every two weeks.) Having your dog bury your spare key makes more sense than that.

This thread inspired me a couple of weeks ago to do something I've never done before — send an e-mail to my state representative. Texas did away with state inspections a couple of years ago, but "EPA non-attainment counties" like the one I live in still require an emissions test. I asked if this requirement had been relaxed and I heard back that it hadn't, but there might be legislation in 2027.
