Iowa and Illinois are working together on gathering information on replacing the Centennial Bridge, which carries US-67 over the Mississippi River between Davenport, IA and Rock Island, IL.

If you look through the presentation materials, they have come up with two alternatives for complete replacement that still remain under consideration. One just west of the current bridge that connects to the same two streets on each side, and one a few blocks south of that. My guess is that one of those two will be chosen since the current bridge isn't sufficient right now.

Looks like somebody liberated that 1940s-spec US 67 shield between 2022 and 2023. Hopefully it winds up in a museum.

But more importantly, I hope they keep this plaque:

They removed all of the emergency bypass signs at the right time, then...

Small correction: usually downstream on the Mississippi means south, but not here  :)

Based on the meeting materials, I believe they are also considering rehabbing the existing bridge and replacing it in place. And I don't think they can rule out no-build at this stage.

If they go the replacement route, aesthetics should be a pretty high consideration for this bridge, moreso than most projects. It's the centerpiece of two downtown areas. As long as they can maintain the symbolic 5 arches (2 big, 3 smaller), I'm happy, and I think most locals will be too.

Yeah, I typed south, but it really isn't south. Downstream would have been better!

I do realize rehab is an option, but I really doubt that is going to be the one chosen. Honestly, I really think what locals want is just a better bridge. That being said, while I am local, I am not a native and have no real emotional tie to the current one.

To be fair, the diagrams were almost all east-up.

I agree with you that rehab is probably the lowest priority, since it feels like it would take the most time. I could really only see that coming into play if land acq was a major factor, but the land around the existing bridge seems to already be owned by the respective cities.
