It's so obsolete that I'm not sure exactly which nations you're referring to, and I'm not sure anyone else my ago or younger would either.  All we'd know is <further commentary snipped to keep this thread from getting closer to a lock than it already is>.

It used to be pretty common to see the term "oriental" in 1980s era Motorweek reviews used in reference to all Asian car manufacturers.  I'm kind of surprised the Motorweek YouTube channel hasn't silenced them out of vintage reviews.

And to answer Beltway's question it is very common for military servicemen to have wife's of Asian descent.  There is a lot American military bases in numerous Asian countries.

The context of how we got to debating "oriental" is a little eyebrow-raising.

I'm honestly surprised this got brought up in reply comments but not that 24-29 age gap.

What do you think goes on in these groups when they're not complaining about feminism or how their lives are?

It is generally considered immoral to marry human resources representatives, as it often leads to conflicts of interest.

I assume you mean female HR reps when you say "oriental women", as those are the women who typically lead orientation.

Even outside one's own department, dating anyone within the same organization has been treated as a workplace risk for at least the last 20 years -- conflicts of interest, reporting‑chain issues, and HR exposure. It's generally regarded as a minefield best avoided.

Calling it a train wreck and then admitting you 'can't turn your eyes away' while continuing to post in it is peak 'I'm not like the other girls' energy.

If you're going to keep calling it a train wreck while obsessively posting in it, at least commit to the bit.

On a roads forum you should be saying 'massive 100-vehicle pileup on the Jersey Turnpike with no survivors' instead of this perfunctory 'train wreck from which I cannot turn my eyes away' routine.

Either lean into the metaphor properly or just close the tab. The constant disappointed commentary is getting old.

This fortuitous timing in the comics is a day late, because it had to wait for the bigger strips on Sundays.  Tattoos are now a permanent stamp of conformity, not defiance.

The only thing worse than a conformist is an anti-conformist.  By doing the opposite of what the crowd does, he's still controlled by public sentiment, but he gets to be smug about it because he believes he's doing his own thing.

Men have always gotten tattoos, at least some small %%%.

But women? I have seen women covered with tattoos. That is a recent advent.

Women getting tattoos is nothing new either. It might have seemed unusual in the 1980's or earlier. By the 1990's it was growing fairly common.

Today it seems like almost every adult woman under the age of 50 has at least one or more tattoos. Two of the three female co-workers at my workplace have visible tattoos on arms or legs. Most of the women I see working out at the gym have visible tattoos. I know some devoutly religious/conservative people who have tattoos. Men and women alike.

Apparently the tattoo removal business is booming though. So maybe there is a tidal shift in culture starting to take place regarding tattoos. Still, as a single man, I'm not going to make a rule for myself to not date a woman if she has tattoos. That dating pool would shrink to a really small number.

Beltway

A couple square inches maybe? A few small tattoos is hardly noticeable especially if usually covered by long sleeve shirts and slacks.

I am finding online data -- Women 18–49 -- ~15-20% have large visible tattoos.

My own observation is that I have known a few in the large visible category that had what I would call interesting and attractive tattoos. Maybe datable.

The bulk of what I have seen? Ralph!

Well, you get what you pay for. Really good quality tattoos aren't cheap. Truly original art rather than the stock "flash" clip art costs more. A tattoo artist who is really skilled is going to charge more. Obviously there is a lopsided balance of unremarkable tattoo art on display versus good, original stuff.

One of my former co-workers has the newborn footprints of his two kids tattooed on his calf muscles. I think that's pretty cool.

Several years ago my civic club ran a mud volleyball tournament on the grounds of one of the tribal casinos. I met this lady who's from the Lawton area; she's an actress/performer in the adult video industry. She was playing on one of the volleyball teams. She had a lot of tattoos, but they were really well drawn/designed. I'm sure they cost a lot of money.
