Does anyone remember ITA?

When I was taught how to read or write in First Grade, I had to learn ITA which was a different alphabet with strange characters instead of our usual 26 characters.   Then in second grade we were forced to forget ITA and learn normal spelling.

What was that all about?  Why did the school system go through the trouble of teaching you something you dont need and then re teach you later the correct.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

You're probably thinking of IPA. Each character corresponds 1:1 with a sound.

There's no reason to learn it in first grade, though; it's mainly in use on the technical side.
