I hope the print is easier to read. I had eye surgery a year ago and can now see 20/15 according to my eye doc. And I still struggle today with the last atlas I bought.

Dude, just get the spiral-bound large print version.  I got that one last time I bought an atlas, and it's way easier to read.

My local Barnes and Noble now has several versions of the 2027 Atlas. As in past year, the amount of updates depends on the state. For example, I could not find any I-74 related updates on the North Carolina map. The I-74 Winston-Salem Beltway, that is to be completed this year is still shown under construction south of US 421 and the completed portion is still NC 74. The new I-74/US 74 bypass of Rockingham is only signed as US 74 as it was last year. There's also no changes showing the new interchange of US 74 and NC 72/130. On the other hand, the Eastern PA map does show I-99 on US 15 north of Williamsport. In CT the exits on I-84 have been updated to milepost versions, that project was to be completed this year, but no exit number changes for I-91 that is to happen next year.  The NY State atlas still has the old I-81 exit numbers.

It's been a while since I looked at a Rand McNally, but I have memories of a few pages of the copies I have being hard to read because the print quality was poor, irrespective of its size.

I switched over to National Geographic road atlases for this reason.   While I miss the Rand McNally style, Nat Geo is at least easier to read while preserving the detail and logical pagination.

Preliminary "Big" Observations

General: There are several locations on the map where a route is shown under construction partially on the state map and wholly on the city inset map. Places include Evansville, NW Arkansas, Lakeland, and Winston-Salem to name a few.

Arkansas: I-57 makes its debut

Does Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel have their version of the 2027 Rand McNally atlas out yet?

I've looked for one at various Wal-Marts I've visited, no luck. You can buy a 2027 RMcN from them online, but it's not a Wal-Mart version, and at $24.99 for the regular-size version I'm unsure there's any discount on the price.

I don't recall ever seeing a Cracker Barrel version. Cracker Barrel used to have free maps available showing all their locations, but I don't recall seeing an atlas for sale.

Unfortunately, Fred Meyer stopped selling RMNs around the same time the Portland Thomas Guide was discontinued.

I've noticed that the Walmart nearest to me doesn't sell the Rand McNally Road Atlas anymore. I've seen them in some public libraries and at the "travel center" type of gas stations, typically at Interstate exits.

I do have a lot of nostalgia-related feelings for the Rand McNally Road Atlas, since it was the way that I first became interested in maps in the early 1990s. Then later, in the late 90s or early 2000s, I got a CD-ROM of some map program, I think it might have been a DeLorme atlas. And with that one, you could zoom in to the street level. Now you can go to Google Maps and "virtually" drive most of the streets in America.

The printed Rand McNally Road Atlas can't compete with the level of detail that the computer maps and online maps offer. But one thing they can do, and I wish they were better at, is clearly marking ALL of the state and federal highways. In the Kansas map, there are many small state highways that are just not shown or marked at all on the Rand McNally Road Atlas.

Years ago, I had a Rand McNally Trip Planner CD-ROM dated 1997 at home. I would have to assume these types of discs targeted users who still didn't have internet at home, or perhaps wanted something more interactive than paper.
