I see the Met Life Stadium has to rebrand its name to New York- New Jersey Staduim during the FIFA games.

A lot of people in NJ dont mind the Insurance Company name removed, but digress New York gets their name on a stadium in New Jersey and first!

Every stadium with a corporate name has to rebrand.

This is stupid with Gillette Stadium becoming "Boston Stadium" despite being 20 miles away from Boston. (Foxborough Stadium as a name unavailable because it was the name of the previous stadium there, not the current one.)

That's not unique to MetLife. FIFA objects to any sponsored stadium name unless the sponsor is a FIFA sponsor. I believe every stadium in this year's World Cup will be given a dumb generic name with the exception of BC Place in Vancouver, and the dumb generic names will all be in the "City Name Stadium" form (e.g., as hotdogPi noted, "Boston Stadium" for the stadium in Foxboro whose real name is Gillette Stadium).

This isn't unique to FIFA. The IOC has the same stick up its arse and demands that Olympic venues use generic names for the duration of the games. Naming-rights holders presumably know this and it's factored into their sponsorship contracts.

I'd think Estadio Azteca would also get to keep their name.

Except it now has a sponsor: Estadio Banorte. Interestingly, FIFA decreed an English-language name for it (Mexico City Stadium) instead of the Spanish equivalent.

Why would re-using the name of a previous stadium be disallowed?

What really does get me is the fact the people of New Jersey object to New York having its name on it.  Being originally from New Jersey, I can relate to that objection.

Dropping naming rights IMO is a godsend as this naming venues after corporations is way to overplayed.

Does New Jersey have to rebrand as New York when FIFA wants to hold a World Cup game?

If FIFA had its way it probably would.

Since we're talking NY and Metlife New York New Jersey Stadium, if you want to get there from NYC via train, pay up.  Tickets are going to run $150 round trip to get from Penn Station to the stadium.

AT&T Stadium (aka Jerryworld) is actually located in Arlington, but is being named "Dallas Stadium" during the world cup. Also, Levi's Stadium is in Santa Clara, but is being called "San Francisco Bay Area Stadium".

People in other countries with some average knowledge of the outside world probably know what Boston and Dallas are. They don't know what Foxboro or Arlington are. Misnomers to me in this situation are a nothingburger.

I'm starting to think FIFA is onto something with these super generic stadium names tied to a predominate city or geographic area.  I'll definitely be using "San Francisco Bay Area Stadium" whenever I go see a game there next time.

Where FIFA will make bank is in public transport to and from Dallas or Boston or San Francisco to Arlington or Foxboro or Santa Clara respectively, with several other examples. I'm hearing reports of $150 train fares just across the Hudson.

The MBTA commuter rail is $80. I'm waiting for someone to undercut them by providing shuttles from the Walpole or Mansfield stations four miles away for $10.

That's NJ Transit (and the MBTA for the $80 tickets from Boston) that will be raking in the cash, not FIFA.

Officially, it's to cover the cost of providing service and disrupting normal operations.

I'm also against sponsored names unless the naming rights owner pays me. I'm not doing free advertising to anyone. So, I'll make up generic names for venues if no known ones (such as planning names) exist.

Meanwhile SEPTA is gonna charge the normal $2.90 for fans to ride the Broad Street Line to Lincoln Financial Field and will offer free rides on the Broad Street Line after the matches end.
