Ouch.  A school bus from a local charter school nailed a canopener railroad overpass on Thursday last week (May 1, 2026).  This one looks it came from Ginsu.

Don't they plan out the bus routes ahead of time?

Oh and hey, I see she was going 10 over the speed limit while plowing into a bridge three feet shorter than her bus.  Good one.

If the city wants extra signage they aren't going to get the railroad to pay for it.

Let's recall, the famous Durham can opener has a height restriction of 12'4". That's high enough that some truck and RV drivers might think they can fit under it before discovering their mistake. This can opener is 4'10" lower, so low that there's no excuse for anyone driving a bus, panel truck or Winnebago to think they can pass under it.

I am really waiting for one of those cases to be dragged all the way to supreme Court to establish that a bar hanging above the road is permissible way to give notice ...

It's been 12'4"+4" (12'8") for quite some time now. ;D

I grew up in Wayne County. I don't recall hearing many incidents at that bridge when I lived there, but I'm not surprised about the bus driver fucking up. The county school board used to have a high turnover of bus drivers because a lot of the ones they hired couldn't drive for shit, so they'd get canned.

Not much has changed, apparently...

For the record, the bus driver who hit the bridge was driving for a charter school and was not an employee of Wayne County Schools.

I know the tide is changing for those in television news -- with younger, less experienced talent working for a hair over minimum wage as the new normal -- but dang, that reporter looked like he was still in high school!!!

I see locals on Facebook suggesting that the low clearance is a common route for locals to get around a train that regularly comes through, as it's basically the only way past the tracks in that part of town that doesn't involve a level crossing, so the bus driver was probably doing the same.

I'm sorry, but if your lorry (for our international readers) or load is taller than Manute Bol, I don't know what to tell you.

I stand corrected. Original point still stands though, generally speaking. But I digress...

Either way, I'm surprised the bridge wasn't knocked out. It's seen better days.

You'd be surprised how flimsy school buses really are...

There's another low clearance overpass in nearby Bailey, NC on NC581.

Well, don't forget he was a teammate of Muggsy Bogues, so maybe they're confused about their Bullets alumni.
