Quote from: PNWRoadgeek on May 31, 2026, 05:00:33 PMMine has been 50/50, when I search sometimes I'll get 502 Bad Gateway and sometimes it just works like normal.

It's never been random for me. Trying to look at the posts of the top two posters (kphoger and Max Rockatansky) always return 502, and everyone else always works fine.

As for searches, it matters how much you narrow it down, but trying the same search twice will always work both times or neither time.
Strange that it's the top 2 users in particular, something about the high post count maybe that breaks search?

There apparently an overflow value that is breaking the search function.

I think it's more that it takes so long to collect all the posts that Cloudflare thinks the server isn't going to respond to the request and declares that it timed out.

And I think around the time we had enough teenage users that I considered the forum to have a "bored teenager" contingent.  It caused record levels of forum activity and made me firmly believe that the current trends of schools giving everyone a Chromebook or tablet for use during class was a mistake.
I was definitely part of that "bored teenager" group (I even started a thread about teenage users!). Finishing high school homeschooled at the end of the pandemic was certainly a reason as to why I was on the forum so much. Not too many of that group still post as regularly as I do though.

Interesting to see what a pandemic does to a road forum.

Quote from: Beltway on May 31, 2026, 12:54:57 PMKyle Hoger has a 90:10 baloney:information ratio.
And yet, his posts are 10 times as enjoyable as yours, and you know why?
Because Kyle actually takes the time to try and make friends here instead of just insisting he's right about everything all the time.
The claim that I "insist I'm right about everything all the time" doesn't align with my actual posting pattern.

I participate in very few threads, and I rarely engage in extended arguments with anyone.

If a factual correction is being interpreted as insistence, that reflects perception rather than behavior.

His posts may well be ten times as enjoyable to The Clique™, but that's a preference, not an evidentiary standard, and they are not enjoyable to me, on the balance they do not add value, which is why I ignore them.

If "taking the time to try and make friends" is now the criterion for evaluating contributions, then it's useful to have that stated plainly.

What do you think the off-topic forum is for? Our discussion about instruments (which Kyle was also a participant) was very interesting even though it didn't directly relate to roads. I learned something from it, and I'm sure others did too. I count that as a huge win as someone who is genuinely curious about a variety of different things.

Do you really think we should be micromanaging everyone's posting patterns? I mean, I guess I would be shown the door since most of my posts are in the off-topic forum, but I also contribute to the main forums.

Agreed, also, why is Kozel talking about how he rarely starts "extended arguments" when for a period(at least for what I've read) was known for pretty consistently doing exactly that in Virginia threads with another user who I won't name. I don't know why Kozel is deflecting all of this when he could just admit to what he posts on the forum and we could move on, especially in the 77% market share thread where he was just instigating, and instigating, and instigating the same topic on to the point where he was basically being made fun of for it.

I mean, look at that kphoger post that I pasted up thread, the dude in that "encounter" was literally named Scott. Don't get me wrong here, Kozel contributes great things to the Mid-Atlantic threads and seems to be very knowledgeable from what I've read, but if he wants to be a well respected member of the forum I feel like I would like to see more positive contribution from him personally, just my opinion, and I don't want him banned or to leave the forum at all.

Also for reference, I don't think he's CLOSE to being K12 or P13 bad.

I've also learned to assume that I don't have all the information.  And also that there are plenty of people on here who know more than I do about a given topic.

I think that's the thing.  None of us are omniscient, but the normal response to being called out on something is to either outright admit one was wrong or to let it go, with doubling down only being for when you can prove that you're actually right.  Beltway seemingly always doubles down.
